Player Spotlight: Avaion Edwards

Baylor reserve linebacker Aiavion Edwards is making the most of his opportunities on the football field. He is the subject in this week's's player spotlight.

Baylor redshirt freshman linebacker Aiavion Edwards played all over the field as a high school standout at Stephenville High School. A 4-star recruit, Edwards was highly touted, highly skilled, and highly recruited. With offers from Stanford, Oklahoma, TCU, and Baylor, among others, it was the Baylor coaching staff that out-recruited the rest of the nation and got the commitment of the talented 6-1 225 athlete. National Recruiting Analyst Greg Powers watched plenty of film of Edwards during his junior and season year at Stephenville and had this to say about him:
"Edwards is a hard-nosed player. Its easy to see that he has the size and ability to be factor at a number of positions in college. He could be an excellent linebacker or he could possibly even play some safety, the spot he got reps at early in his prep career. Do not rule out running back, He can run, does not go down on first contact and has vision. You want that talent on your roster and you find a spot to get him on the field."

Now at Baylor, Edwards is starting to show just how talented he is. As a reserve linebacker, 2nd on the depth chart under two starting senior linebackers, Edwards has had the chance to play a lot in Baylor's first two games of the season. In those two games, Edwards has recorded 10 total tackles with 7 of them being solo tackles. Edwards has been disruptive in opponent's backfields tallying 4 tackles for loss and notching the first two sacks of his career.

Through the first part of the 2013 schedule, Edwards has shown what he showed through Spring and Fall camp: excellent speed, a nose for the ball, and a knowledge of the game that coaches look for in a defensive leader. While Edwards currently sits second on the depth chart, his number will likely be called in plenty of situations this season in key situations. Next year, it is highly likely that Edwards will be atop the depth chart entering his sophomore year.

Keep it tuned to for all the latest regarding Baylor recruiting and athletics.
