Recruiting News and Notes

Commitments and one big surprise visitor headline a huge recruiting weekend for the Baylor Coaching staff. BearsIllustrated has all the latest to get you ready for what should be an extremely successful recruiting weekend for the Baylor staff.

Fresh off of their first Big 12 Championship in school history, the Baylor coaching staff has been on the road trying to reel in the best talent they can. On top of that, they are welcoming in a group of commitments from their great 2014 class. Baylor has steadily become a household name in recruiting, and their hard work is beginning to pay off.

2014 Commits take officials, plus a HUGE surprise visitor

Last week, Baylor welcomed in members of their 2014 class for their official visits. With 8 of their commits already on campus, it is important for the commits to get on campus and look forward to the future. This week will be no different as Jamie Jacobs, Ira Lewis, James David, T'Kevian Rockwell, Greg Roberts, Devonte Jones, Xavier Jones, and Stefan Beard make the trek up to Baylor.

Along with the commits who will be in town, the Baylor coaching staff will also welcome a top safety to campus. John Bonney, who chose the Texas Longhorns over Baylor last fall, will take an official visit to Baylor this weekend. In fact, as of this publishing of this article, Bonney has indeed made it to campus. This will be an interesting development to watch because Bonney could help fill a need left void by the graduation of Ahmad Dixon. Bonney's lead recruiter at Texas was Duane Akina, who has since left Texas. Bonney knows the Baylor coaching staff, and it seems that Baylor preferred a Bonney visit vs a Jah'Shawn Johnson visit, which was cancelled this week.

Time will tell as to what happens with Bonney, but I would imagine the Baylor staff is going to put the full court press on Bonney and push for him to flip his commitment this weekend. With the uncertainty at Texas, it would seem that Baylor might have a good shot at getting him to do so.

Devontre Stricklin Commits

The 2015 class started out with a bang with the early commitments of Chad President and Ronnie "Buck" Major. Not too much longer, Blake Lynch followed suit and joined the Bears. With Junior Day coming up, the Bears were able to start of the weekend with a huge commitment from Devontre Stricklin. Stricklin continues a pipeline created at nearby Midway (TX) High School.

Stricklin has an outstanding Junior season, as we hauled in 1,023 yds on 45 catches, with 14 TD's. Stricklin is very similar to possession receiver, Levi Norwood, but is a little bigger and faster at this point in his career than Norwood. Stricklin is tall and rangy and should be able to provide another deep threat for a Bears offense that isn't lacking in explosive playmakers at the WR position.

Stricklin developed a relationship with the Baylor staff early, and showed his interest by attending every Baylor home game this past season. Ahmad Dixon started the trend and now Stricklin continues a trend that brings Baylor a 6th Midway player in as many years.

Will Junior Day Bring More Good News for Baylor?

If you follow Blake Lynch on twitter then you will see just how much he loves Baylor. He has gone from 2015 commit to Baylor recruiter. Since his commitment, Lynch has made no secrets about who he is recruiting to Baylor. From star DE James Lockhart, of Ennis (TX) High School, to one of the nations top QB prospects in Jarrett Stidham, from Stephenville (TX) High School, Lynch is working to make sure that this 2015 Baylor class is one of the best in the country.

One of the players he has been working is James Lockhart. Lockhart, who is currently a 4 star prospect on the database, is widely considered as one of the top defensive prospects in Texas. Recently, Lockhart named Baylor his leader, and after speaking with Blake, this past week, it would not surprise me to see Lockhart commit during the Junior Day. Even if Lockhart decides to not pull the trigger, I believe Baylor will secure commitments of AT LEAST 2 recruits, possibly more.

Below is a list of the recruits we believe will be in attendance on Sunday. BearsIllustrated has learned that Baylor will invite a few recruits for a Saturday visit, but the big day will be Sunday. Along with the names of players, I will add some insight in to those players I have spoken to or have heard information on. Enjoy!

Blake Lynch

Chad President

Ronnie Major

James Lockhart - This talented defensive prospect could pull the trigger in favor of the Bears this weekend.

Jarrett Stidham - Baylor is putting all of its eggs in the basket on this one. Stidham is a wanted man all over the country, but the Bears have a great relationship with the signal caller. Baylor would love nothing more than to get a commitment from Stidham, but will most likely not push him much.

James Proche - This talented WR has Baylor at the top of his list, but the Bears may be close to shutting down their recruitment of WR's soon and Proche might be caught in a numbers game. Should the Bears offer this weekend, Proche will pull the trigger.

Charles Omenihu - The 2015 defensive recruit, out of Rowlett (TX) High School, will also be one to watch. Omenihu is beginning to pick up offers, but none are of the major variety yet. Baylor is certainly evaluating him and could give an offer soon. I also believe that Omenihu could be a Bear, if Baylor pulls the trigger on an offer.

DeMarkus Lodge - The Bears are sitting pretty with this 4 star receiver out of Cedar Hill (TX) High School.

Richard Moore - Another Cedar Hill prospect who likes Baylor. Baylor was one of the first to offer, and could get his pledge this weekend.

Anthony Wheeler

Cameron Townsend

Chris Warren - Warren fits the shifty big back the Bears had with Glasco Martin. Warren is one of the top RBs in the state, and the Bears are in the thick of it for his services.

Darrion Daniels - Daniels is a big time DT recruit and is one the Bears have been on for a while. Daniels has said that Baylor is in the lead. Could he be a Bear on Sunday?

Jaelen Austin

Ronald Jones II

Holton Hill

Soso Jamabo - Coach Art Briles made a visit to the #1 RB recruit in the state. It's hard to say where the Bears sit, but getting him on campus is a big deal for Baylor.

Jordan Tolbert - The 2015 Houston Cougar commit wants to get to know the coaches better and see what Baylor has to offer.

Keaton Sutherland

Donta Thompson

Abdul Beechum

Ja'Mychal Hasty - There are conflicting reports on whether or not he will be here or at A&M on Sunday. We will soon find out.

Jaylon Jones - The Bears newest 2016 offer.

Anthony Hines - This Mississippi State commit, will take in Baylor's Junior Day to see what the Bears are all about.

Tony Nicholson

Khalil Haughton - Could he join his teammate at Baylor?

Patrick Vahe - The current Texas Longhorn commit received a Baylor offer recently, and will make his first trip to Baylor.

Keep it tuned to as we get ready for what could be a great weekend for Baylor Football. If you haven't signed up for text alerts, do so as we will be sending out tons of information over the next few days.
