BearsIllustrated Recruiting Roundup 7/14

The Bears are looking for the final pieces of their 2015 class and gearing up for a strong 2016 recruiting class. BearsIllustrated updates you on a couple of those prospects, as well as provides updates on McLane Stadium, and a few basketball notes.

Baylor will host their final camp of the 2014 summer season, this Friday, July 18th, from 3 pm to 6 pm. This is Baylor's Junior/Senior camp, so it will give the coaches an opportunity to look at talent from 2015 and 2016, and find those perfect recruits for this growing program. BearsIllustrated will be represented at the camp, and will provide in depth analysis on attendees and their performances. As a primer for the camp, we have a few updates on some prospects that will be in attendance on Friday.

J.P. Urquidez Looking Forward to Camp

J.P. Urquidez is a 2016 prospect that Baylor is in the drivers seat with. Urquidez received his first offer from Baylor back in the spring, and has been coming back to Waco when ever he's had the chance. "I've been blessed with these opportunities. I have a great relationship with the Baylor coaches. I'm excited to get back on campus!" Urquidez will be coming down to make the rounds at some of the schools that are showing great interest in him. "Right now I'm hearing from Baylor, Texas, Florida State, LSU, and Alabama the most. At this point I'm just waiting to release my top 5, but Baylor will definitely be on it." As for the other 4 mentioned? "No sir, not all of those schools will be in my top 5." BearsIllustrated will check in with J.P. after his trip to Texas this weekend.

Corey Dauphine Nearing Decision

Corey Dauphine has been an interesting prospect to follow the past few months. While Dauphine is still committed to Texas Tech, it is safe to say that the Port Arthur (TX) Memorial HS RB is a "soft" commit to the Red Raiders. Dauphine will be making his decision towards the beginning of the season, and it is well known that he will be choosing between Tech, Texas A&M, and Baylor. Recently Corey hosted a couple of Track & Field Head Coaches, as Coach Miller, from Texas Tech T&F, and Coach Todd Harbour, from Baylor T&F, paid in home visits to the dynamic RB. "It went good. I had a great time hanging out with Coach Harbour!" With Texas Tech, it is just continuing to show Dauphine that he is wanted. "Coach Miller, from Texas Tech, came by, but he was just telling me how high they were on me for track and football." The 200m State Champion has been told by both schools that he will have the opportunity to play Football and run Track. Dauphine says that as it is with Football, he has a great relationship with the T&F coaches. BearsIllustrated will continue to monitor this situation and update you when we have information relation to Dauphines recruitment.

Mhiesen Sets Up Baylor Visit

It was reported that Deya Mhiesen would be visiting Baylor this summer, but it seems things have changed on that front. "I set up my visit for August 30th, when Baylor plays SMU. I'll definitely be down for that." Mhiesen has seen his recruitment pick up recently, and reports offers from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. He plans to visit those two schools, and has a July 20th visit set up with Arizona State. Mhiesen is an intriguing prospect for the Bears, and seems to fit the mold of the tall, athletic OT's that Coach Briles and Coach Clements go for. Mhiesen does maintain that he has a great relationship with Coach Clements, and is excited about getting down to see the Bears open McLane Stadium. His visit to Waco could be an interesting one, as we believe that he could end his commitment if that visit goes well. He will certainly be one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

McLane Stadium 97% Finished

Things have been moving along at a furious pace over the past few months. BearsIllustrated spoke to a source close to the stadium construction, to get a few updates.

-- With the field turf being installed over the past couple of weeks, there are still some finishing touches left. One of those touches is the base being applied to the field. Those touches should be finished this week or next.

-- The pedestrian bridge is nearing completion. Our source says that one side of the bridge is complete, while the other side should follow behind it quickly. The bridge should be completely finished over the next couple of weeks.

-- The Track and Field complex is being built quickly. The base foundation of the offices/locker room has been put up, and one of the stand infrastructures has been put up. The complex is still on pace to be completed this fall.

Quick Basketball Notes

BearsIllustrated caught up with a source close to the basketball program, to get a couple of updates.

-- The coaches will be out recruiting from Wednesday through Sunday every week in July. This past weekend Coach Scott Drew was in Las Vegas for the LeBron James Academy. In Texas, Coach Tang was present for the George McLennan Invitational in Houston.

-- Our source believes that the 2014 class is done, but things could always change. With the 2015 class, the Bears seem to be eyeing 3-4 prospects for that class. For the 2015 class, the Bears top prospects are Tyler Davis and D.J. Hogg. Baylor is in a great position with both, and King McClure is certainly helping in that aspect.

-- As for prospects the Bears could go after, should their top prospects fall through, are Shake Milton, Eric Davis, and Henry Ellenson.
