Wendell Mitchell, 4 star shooting guard from Houston, committed to Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears late last night. After visiting this summer, Mitchell decided to make his final decision public via Twitter, after having previously cut his list to SMU and Baylor. Other schools in play during his recruiting process included Maryland and Kansas State.
Mitchell seems to have come out of nowhere during the Spring of his junior season, where he impressed talent evaluators at the opening game of the Under Armour tournament. According to Scout’s own Rob Harrington, Mitchell struggled on and off during the remainder of the season, but did impress mightily at the Jayhawk Invitational in April.
What first jumps out about Mitchell is his extreme athleticism. He is quick on his feet and has the agility to get by defenders with ease. He is also a very gifted three-point shooter. His offensive game relies mainly on creating space and making his own shot, but he is able to knock down contested shots as well. That said, he is in need of refinement, most especially on the defensive end.
Sources say Mitchell was extremely impressive during his visit and was described as insanely athletic and having "unlimited potential." It will be interesting to see Mitchell pair up in the backcourt with King McClure and Lester Medford when he gets to campus.
