Baylor Collapses against Michigan State

For 3 quarters, it was all Baylor. We celebrated big touchdowns left and right, and left the BIGGEST one for last. But football is four quarters, and Baylor lost the game when it mattered most. What can we take from this one? Plenty.

We now know what TCU feels like. A 20 point lead with 12 minutes to go should be enough to win a game. Almost every single time, it is. For what has to be the first time in college football history, a single team is on both sides of a 20 or more point comeback to win and lose a game. The feeling was magical when it was the Bears overcoming a massive deficit to grab victory from the jaws of defeat. The feeling isn’t nearly as magical as you watch the lead and game crumble from your fingertips like sand. The Baylor castle was built, only for a Spartan wave to wash it all away. For the second year in a row, a bowl loss will leave the Bears with an 11-2 record, but to call this just a regular old bowl game loss is ridiculous.

The Bears lost 42-41 in a game that was their game for all but a few minutes. A 14-7 lead in the first quarter for Michigan State was answered by the Bears with a 27-0 run to put the Bears up 34-14. After the two teams traded touchdowns late in the 3rd quarter, the final stanza started with Chris Callahan hitting a 46-yard field goal off of the upright. From that point on, it was all Michigan State.

The Bears had their chances, oh did they ever have their chances. A useless block in the back on an interception returned for a touchdown took points off the board that the Bears would desperately need. A questionable call on 4th down and 5 to go for it near mid-field backfired and gave Michigan State a short field to play with. An interesting face-mask call on Corey Coleman inside of the 5-yard line pushed the ball outside of the 20 and with some bad play calling, and a false start penalty tacked on, it all setup a long field goal for Callahan. With the Bears rushing to get it off (despite the fact that they had 3 timeouts) the freshman kicker booted the ball low and into the arms of the oncoming Spartans. The ball was recovered and ran back to give MSU excellent field position with no timeouts and a touchdown required.

The Baylor defense needed to make a stop. The Baylor hopes all landed on the shoulders of an exhausted defensive line and a torn apart Baylor secondary. A 4th down pass kept the drive alive and put it just inside the 10, and then a 3rd down pass off a simple slant pattern put the dagger into the hearts of the Baylor faithful. With the extra point the final plunge, it was a 42-41 game with just 17 seconds left. After two sacks by Michigan State on Bryce Petty, the final play for the Bears was a Bryce Petty pass picked off by the Spartans. It was truly and awful way for Petty and his fellow seniors careers to end.

After the game, the Bears were naturally despondent. A feeling of shock and “what the heck just happened” was everywhere to be seen. This loss will define the Bears, at least in the eyes of the doubters. It will once again show that Baylor is not a premier team, and will fold against a good team. Like it or not, that is the narrative now, one that the Bears had a chance to dispel. They did for three quarters, but this isn’t hockey.

Fun Stats of the Game

-LaQuan McGowan, all 400 pounds of him, scored a touchdown. Remember that? That was pretty fun.

-Baylor had -20 yards rushing. Without Bryce Petty’s stats included (7 for -36), the Baylor running backs ran the ball 14 times for 22 yards.

-Baylor committed 11 penalties for 105 yards, including one that took away a touchdown and one that took away a first and goal inside the 5

-Baylor set a school record for passing yards in a game with 603, including a career high 550 from Bryce Petty

-Baylor scored at least one TD in 45 of 52 quarters played this season, but zero in their last quarter of the year

-Baylor had two receivers with at least 150 yards, with Corey Coleman (150) and KD Cannon (197) reaching the mark

-Michigan State had 7 sacks, while the Bears just had 1

Words of the Game

Offense – Great (but not enough)

Anytime you get 583 yards and 41 points, you should win the game. But the complete lack of a rushing attack hurt the Bears late, as they just could not (or would not) run the ball on Michigan State. Consider this a learning process for Kendall Briles, who called some exceptional plays. Sometimes though, you need to be simple and run the ball. You need to do it even though it isn’t working. The run game controls the clock, tires out a defense and slows down the pass rush. With 7 sacks, the Spartans defense simply didn’t have to worry about a rush threat, they just went after the quarterback.

There were a lot of great things in this game. Bryce Petty was exceptional distributing the ball. He missed on a few plays, but he did more than enough to win this game. KD Cannon and Corey Coleman exploded with monster games, and proved to be a more than capable future of this wide receiver unit. The cherry on all of this was the final touchdown of the game for the Bears, an 18 yard pass from Petty to backup 400+ pound guard LaQuan McGowan.

Defensive – Work-In-Progress

With 41 points and a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter with 12 minutes to go, the game should be over, barring turnovers. For this one to be a loss is primarily on the defense, though the offense and special teams obviously contributed. The Bears were torn apart by the run (5.2 yards per carry for 238 yards) and the pass (314 yards and 5.2 yards per pass). They could not stop Jeremy Langford when they needed too. Late in the game, the Bears again could not stop the deep passes, playing soft coverage to give up the short ones, and still getting beat deep.

The talent is simply not there yet in the secondary. It is a young secondary still learning to make play. Add those two together, and you get a year like this one. We can talk about the coaching all day, but the talent and experience has to be better. Until those are fixed, then there isn’t much else to say. Add to that a nonexistent pass rush, and you get a bad pass defense. With the Bears being blown off the ball time and time again, they made a good offense loo exceptional.

Play of the Game

?????

The play of the game from the Bears side was the McGowan touchdown pass to finish the Bears scoring log. It was a brilliant wrinkle, using McGowan as a tight end and send him up the hash mark. Literally no Michigan State defender was within 10 yards of him, and it wasn’t because of his blazing speed. But we know that isn’t the true play of the game.

It could have been the face-mask call on Corey Coleman that robbed the Bears of a first and goal inside the five and at least a chip-shot field goal for a 2-score lead late. It could have been the block in the back on the Taylor Young touchdown. Heck, it could have been the ridiculous pass to the boundary that put Antwan Goodley out of bounds and stopped the clock with Michigan State doing everything they could to stop the clock.

In all actually, it was probably the final touchdown of the game, or maybe the fourth down plays a few seconds before that kept the game alive for Michigan State. I don’t know which one to choose, and quite honestly, I don’t have the energy or the desire to watch any of it again right now.

Players of the Game

Offense – Bryce Petty ( 36/51, 550 yards passing, 4 total touchdowns)

A transcendent performance, and probably the best of his career. Petty was rightfully awarded the offensive MVP of the game, little consolation after a loss like that. Bryce Petty was throwing darts all over the field, carrying an offense that refused to run the ball for most of the game. It seemed to be working, until the Bears front tired and they needed to run the ball.

Honorable Mention: KD Cannon (8 receptions, 197 yards, 2 touchdowns), Corey Coleman (7 catches, 150 yards, 1 touchdown), LaQuan McGowan (1 catch, 18 yards, 1 touchdown)

Defense – Taylor Young (15 total tackles, 1 interception)

Consider him one of the few that did his job. Young was everywhere on the day, leading the team in tackles, and coming up with a monster interception that he returned for a touchdown. Unfortunately for him, and of no fault or benefit to him, the play was called back. It was a great effort for the redshirt freshman, who will be looked to as a leader in the coming years for the defense.

Honorable Mention – ???

Summary

This one hurts. It was there for the taking and the Bears did just enough to lose this game. Michigan State made two huge special teams plays by recovering an on-side kick and blocking a game-sealing field goal. The Bears missed two field goals, and didn’t get any big plays from their special teams unit at all. Add that to a defense that could not stop the run, put pressure on the quarterback, and had little good plays from the secondary, well, you get a loss. Even with a masterful passing performance. The Bears will be licking their wounds for a while, as soon as they all realize what has just happened. Most likely, they are still in shock, still going back to the moment Baylor took a 20 point lead and the stadium cheered for a 400 pound man scoring a touchdown.
