"I'm really looking to improve on my pass rush. I want to have a lot more sacks next year, and also be a better leader for our team to reach the state title game." Jones mentioned that he was expecting coaches to visit him this spring and to possibly earn more offers, but when asked, Jones says laughingly, "I don't want to jinx it, but some more, haha."
Currently Jones holds offers from Houston, SFA, Navy, Air Force, and Army, however, the 6'3, 290 lb Junior is hearing from Texas Tech, SMU, and Memphis. There is one school from the Big 12 that Jones was able to visit for their Junior Day. "I went up to Baylor for their Junior day. I liked the facilities and the coaches, but the one thing I liked was the strength and condition coaches," Jones said. "I could really tell they care about developing and making players better." And what message stood out most? "I really liked what they said about life. One of the staff members said, "Be who you are each day," and that really stood out to me."
Despite his early success, Jones says that education is the most important thing to him. Jones is near the top of his class, and thanks his parents for their persistence in making sure he has a great education. "They definitely push my grades, and they've also pushed me to take pride in working hard in everything I do."
Having the grades and the athletic ability is important, but Jones also knows that he couldn't have done it without the support of his family and coaches. "My parents have just been very supportive of me by getting me to different Junior Days and visits. They tell me to be patient with the process. I can't thank them enough!" And besides his parents, he knows that his coaches are doing everything they can as well. Two of his coaches know the process well, and are names Baylor fans will remember, in Dan Gay and Will Blaylock. "My coaches have also helped a lot by sending out my film, and the countless hours they work."
Jones will continue to be patient with the process, but he knows that things are just on the edge of taking off. With a strong spring and summer, Jones could see his offer list rise to the double digits. BearsIllustrated will continue to monitor his recruitment and bring you the latest on the 2016 class.
