The Baylor Bears used an 11-0 run to start the game, and a 17-7 run late in the second half when TCU got within 2 points to pull away with a 86-71 win over the Horned Frogs. It is the 6th road win for the Bears in Big 12 play and improves them to 10-6 on the season, while TCU falls to 2-14 in conference play.
A 45-21 rebounding edge, including 16 offensive rebounds, powered the Bears attack. The edge on the glass allowed the Bears to outscore TCU 25-7 on second chance points. Baylor also dominated TCU in general in the paint, putting up 40 points versus just 16 for TCU.
In a game that had plenty of whistles, and a combined 66 free throws, the Bears led throughout. Ish Wainright scored the Bears first four points of the game off of offensive rebounds. A Jonathan Motley dunk capped the opening run before TCU hit back-to-back three pointers to finally get on the board. The Horned Frogs shot the ball well from behind the arc, making 8-15. It was by far their best offensive strategy, as they made just 11-32 from inside the arc. In fact, almost 70% of the TCU points came from 3-pointers or the free throw lin, where they hit 25-33.
The Bears, sticking with their man defense for the first 30 minutes of action, clamped down on the paint and took away the interior shots with 6 blocks. Baylor did go back to their familiar 1-3-1 zone defense with 9 minutes to go, as TCU creeped to within 2 points. The switch proved very powerful, as TCU scored just 16 more points. With the lead down to two, the Bears hit three consecutive three-pointers to push the lead back out to eleven.
Point guard Lester Medford sparked the run with his passing, getting 3 of his 10 assists in this stretch. First, Medford found Taurean Prince on the right wing. Then he found Ish Wainright wide open in the corner, before capping it off with another assist to Taurean Prince. The lead was once again in double digits and TCU would never recover as they would never get within even 8 points.
Taurean Prince and Jonathan Motley both had big closing stretches for the Bears. Both starting forwards scored 22 points on the night to lead Baylor. Motley scored 8-straight points in the clincing run on a variety of low post moves. With TCU moving to their 2-3 zone, the Bears simply got the ball into the middle of the floor and used a high-low action to get Motley the ball in space. The Frogs simple didn't have an answer.
Prince made 2-3 from behind the arc and attacked the paint consistently. Both Motley and Prince were incredibly effective, scoring a combined 44 points on just 27 shots. 28 of those points came in the second half as the Bears took command of the game.
Malique Trent led the Horned Forgs with 25 points, while Chauncey Collins scored 17. Ish Wainright was the only other player from either team that scored in double figures with 11.
Next up for the Baylor Bears is a trip to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners Tuesday night.
