Baylor pushed past Florida State 78-58 to advance to Elite 8

Behind Nina Davis' 30 point effort, the Lady Bears defeated the Florida State Seminoles 78-58.

Behind a big performance from all-american Nina Davis, the Lady Bears defeated the Florida State Seminoles in 3rd round action of the NCAA tournament, 78-58. Nina Davis led the Bears with 30 points. Alexis Jones had 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Niya Johnson finished with 8 points and 8 assists.

The game got off to a ragged start for the Lady Bears, as turnovers slowed down their offense and gave the Seminoles the chance to get out into the open court. An uncharacteristic 7 turnovers for Baylor provided much needed room to run for FSU, giving them 9 ponits. Facing a 12-9 defict, Coach Kim Mulkey called her first timeout of the game.

Baylor would respond. Kristy Wallace would hit two 3-pointers, and Alexis Jones would close the quarter with another 3-pointer to give Baylor a 24-15 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Lady Bears would hit 4 of 5 three pointers in the opening quarter as Florida State focused their defensive energy and attention in the paint.

The second quarter was more Baylor, led by Alexis Jones and Nina Davis. With Florida State's guards pressing up on them to take away the 3-pointers, it gave them driving lanes to the bucket.   With just four turnovers, the Lady Bears defense started to shine, holding Florida State to just 8-32 shooting in the first half on the way to a 40-24 Baylor lead.

Florida State would start to hit shots in the 3rd quarter, making as many shots in those 10 minutes as they did in the first 20.  They shot 53% from the floor in that quarter, and trimmed the lead down to 8 at one point.

Another strong close to the quarter though, this time an 8-2 run, extended the Baylor lead back up to 15.  The fourth quarter was all Baylor, as they pushed the lead into the twenties.  Nina Davis scored 20 of her game high 30 points in the second half, as the Bears coasted to a big twenty point win.

Key Stats of the Game:
