Baylor Bears 2016-17 Football Scholarship Chart

After the weekend commitments of Tyrae Simmons and Thomas Cletcher, here is an updated look at the Baylor Bears football scholarship chart for 2016-17.

With Spring all wrapped up, it is time to look at the scholarship chart for next year.  The Bears are welcoming a group of 19 true freshmen to campus later this summer, with a few already on the roster and depth chart. Baylor will have 19 true freshmen, 14 redshirt freshmen, 17 sophomores, 23 juniors and 13 seniors on the roster right now.

According to my notes, there are 86 scholarship players after the commitments of juco transfers Thomas Celtcher and Tyrae Simmons. The NACA maximum is 85, so that is something to keep an eye on.

  • Baylor only has 1 senior scholarship lineman on the roster, Kyle Fuller.  This will be a rebuilding line this year, but 2017 will be loaded with 8 seniors.  I expect Tyrae Simmons to redshirt to push that number down to 7 though.
  • Lynx Hawthorne is the lone senior receiver on scholarship, as Kaleb Moore has switched to safety.
  • Running back will be hit hard with Shock Linwood and Devin Chafin both graduating, so the Bears will take at least 1-2 2017 recruits here.

  • Easy to see why the Bears are loading up at the safety position in 2016 and 2017.  Three spots to fill there.
  • Baylor has 8 freshmen (true or redshirt) corners on the roster.  That is a TON.  There will be some that move to safety, but also probably attrition here.  Something to watch in the coming seasons.
  • With defensive tackle realy thin in the freshman class (just true freshman Bravyion Roy), the Bears will need a big class in 2017 and possibly 2018.  Of course, the 3-man front option takes that need down a bit.
  • The addition of another linebacker spot to fill does add need there as well however, and the Bears will lose 1 linebacker going into next year, as well as a backup NB.  Expect a big focus at the middle linebacker spot in this class.
