After losing Seth Russell to eligibility, the Bears were going in to spring with 1 scholarship QB on campus in Zach Smith. It wasn't the ideal situation for Matt Rhule and company, as they start their path of rebuilding the Baylor football program. Christmas came a little late, however, as Coach Rhule was able to secure his first major commitment from Lake Travis (TX) HS QB Charlie Brewer.
Brewer had been committed to Coach Chad Morris, and SMU, for a few months, but thought there might be a better opportunity to play early at Baylor and couldn't pass up the opportunity.
BearsIllustrated caught up with the newest Baylor commit, as he shares why he chose to flip to Baylor.
BS - Congrats on the commitment, how does it feel to get the decision out of the way?
CB - It feels great to end the recruiting process.
BS - Since you were committed to SMU, how difficult was it to flip and what helped make the decision to flip to Baylor?
CB - Leaving SMU was tough, I've know coach Morris for a really long time and he's an awesome coach. Baylor being in the Big 12 was a big factor and the coaching staff is great.
BS - Which coach(es) recruited you and how quickly did the relationship build to get you to feel comfortable to commit to Baylor?
CB - Coach Rhule, Coach Bell, Coach Wetzel, and Coach McGuire all recruited me.
BS - What are the coaches telling you about the type of offense they will be running and what do you think you bring to the table?
CB - The coaches have said I'm gonna get to throw the ball around a lot in this offense. I think I bring a hard working attitude and am able to tuck it and run when needed.
BS - Do you still plan to enroll early to Baylor? Have you been told you will be given a shot to earn the starting job?
CB - Yes, I enroll January 9th.
BS - With a season riddled with controversy, what can you tell the Baylor faithful to help them look forward?
CB - I can tell everyone rooting for Baylor that I'm gonna come in and work really hard and give it my all everyday.
