Anthony Smith: One To Watch

Anthony Smith, a linebacker from Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas is starting to get a lot of attention. He performed well at the Scout.com combine, and recently made a visit to Baylor. BearsIllustrated.com caught up with Anthony to get the latest. See what he has to say about the Bears inside.

Anthony Smith opened up a lot of eyes at the Scout.com combine. Two weeks ago he visited Baylor and came away impressed. Anthony Smith talks about those two experiences.

"I did better than I thought I would do [at the Scout.com combine], but I think I could have done a lot better."

ON VISITING BAYLOR UNIVERSITY:

"I went two Fridays ago. Oh, it was the nicest school. Not just the athletic facilities, but the whole school. All the work they put into it, it's just a really nice school."

While he only has an offer from UTEP, he is hearing a lot from Minnesota, Tulsa, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Northwestern. Smith is planning on making a visit up to Northwestern on the 24th."

New offensive coordinator Lee Hays is recruiting Anthony Smith, and Smith had nothing but praise for the Baylor coach.

"Coach Hays is probably the most real person, not just as a recruiting coach. He speaks the truth and stuff, and you can tell he is a real good person. I like that. I like talking to him."

"Baylor never has said that an offer is coming, but the way they talk and the way I felt I did on my visit, I think they may offer. I didn't get to meet the linebackers coach or the defensive coordinator because they were in San Diego, so I am trying to go back to their camp in June to see if I can meet them."

Anthony Smith runs well for a 6-0 205 pound linebacker. Smith thinks there are other parts of his game that he feels are better.

"On the field, I read my keys, and I make sure I don't get stopped. And then on the tackle, I make sure that I make the tackle. It may not be a highlight clip, but I will get the tackle."

Smith compares his style of play to players such as Derrick Johnson and Takeo Spikes.

"Derrick Johnson just started in the NFL, but when he was playing in college, I think I could compare myself to him. And then maybe Takeo Spikes."

Anthony Smith is also a student of the game. It is not uncommon to see Smith in the film room any chance he gets.

"Last fall, during off-season, or at lunch, I would go three or four times a week down to the film room and just watch what we were doing and stuff, and watch what other people would do, and what I needed to do."

Smith was an All-District selection last season, and he hopes to be able to duplicate that his senior year.

"I just want to have a successful year. Whatever comes, comes, but I want to make sure I have a successful year."

So what is it that Smith is looking for in a college?

"I will probably start out in business, and then move into law. Some schools are real strong in one area, but when you average in all aspects of college that's when you know they are an all-around good school. That's what I look at. I am not looking for one thing that stands out. I'm looking for a lot of things that live up to what they talk about."

Anthony Smith is a great student, great football player, and will be a great asset to whatever school it is he chooses to attend.
