Michael Ray Talks with Bears Illustrated

LaMarque High School is known for producing legitimate football talent year in and year out. With the upcoming football season approaching fast, BearsIllustrated.com caught up with one of LaMarque's biggest stars. His name is Michael Ray. Come inside to see what he had to say about Baylor, his comeback from injury, and when he expects to make a decision.

At 6-3 240, Michael Ray is one player on the football field that opposing coaches do not like going against. Reporting max bench press at 345, and a squat at 525, Ray is a powerful football player that knows how to get the job done. He plays tight end, and defensive end for his LaMarque High School football team, and is mostly receiving interest to play defensive end. Baylor is recruiting Ray to play on the offensive line.

Ray participated in the Scout.com Combine, but admits that his performance was not what it could have been. And for good reason.

"I was just coming off of an injury [foot]. I didn't do too well because of it."

His performance at the Scout.com combine didn't prevent coaches from noticing Ray as he holds several schoalrship offers.

"Right now, my top 3 are Kansas, Miami, and Florida. But of those, only Kansas has offered."

Ray is spending the summer getting back to form after surgery kept him down for awhile. He is hitting the weight room, running, and doing plenty of leg workouts to get ready for the season.

Ray talks about his game:

"I think my conditioning is the best part of my game. Speed and conditioning."

Ray explains that while he would like to play tight end more, he is mainly being considered a defensive player by most college coaches. So what is it that gets Ray excited on the football field?

"Big hits. Hitting the running back. It is not my style to be a loud talker. I keep it concealed."

Ray also talks about being a leader on his LaMarque squad.

"I'm a leader. I just say 'Shake it off, and step up'"

Listening to music and playing video games are things Ray enjoys in his spare time, but he also gets serious when talking about football and where he might be playing in a couple of years.

"Coach Wnek is recruiting me from Baylor. I have also had a couple of conversations with the head coach, Coach Morriss."

"Coach Wnek is a good guy, and so is Coach Morriss. I know if I want to learn from the best I go to Baylor."

Ray explains that his friend and teammate, Raphael Guidry, are looking to play collegiate football at the same place.

"We are trying to play together. Right now, we can do that at either Kansas or Baylor."

While Ray doesn't think he will make a decision until well into the season, he knows what he is looking for.

"I am looking for a good education and a good environment."

Mike Ray is definitely a player to keep an eye on as the football season starts to roll around. Soon, Mike Ray and LaMarque High School will be at it again playing under the Friday night lights. As always, BearsIllustrated.com will have it all covered.
