Baylor Gets Big Road Victory

The Baylor Bears got a big victory on the road in dramatic fashion defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks 92-84.

With less than 6 minutes to go in the first half, the Baylor Bears trailed the South Carolina Gamecocks by 20 points. That is when Baylor decided to start playing the up-tempo game they like to play. The result: cutting the lead to 5 by the half.

In the first half, the Baylor Bears were missing close range shots, tip-ins, and could not get in a rythym offensively. However, the veteran squad never panicked, but instead kept chipping away. Lacedarius Dunn, a true freshman, helped the cause by hitting several key shots down the stretch in the first half. The run allowed Baylor to be within striking distance for the final 20 minutes.

The final 20 minutes saw an offensive explosion and the type of defensive intensity that Baylor head coach Scott Drew emphasizes. Baylor junior Curtis Jerrells poured in 21 points on the night, hitting several key free throws down the stretch. Junior Delbert Simpson gave the Bears high energy off the bench scoring 6 points in 15 minutes. Additionally, Simpson hauled in 7 rebounds and recorded a blocked shot for the Bears.

However, the player of the game must be Lacedarius Dunn. The talented combo guard was the game's leading scorer with 24, and seemed to hit big shot after big shot. Dunn went 6-8 from three point range and was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. His 24 points and 5 rebounds were accumulated in 25 minutes of action.

The Bears also got good production from forward Kevin Rogers and senior guard Aaron Bruce. Rogers recorded yet another double double pulling down 12 rebounds and scoring 12 points on the night, while the aussie guard, Aaron Bruce, added 13 points.

The Bears were able to take a lead in the 2nd half against the Gamecocks, and never looked back. While they were up by 15 at one point in the game, the Bears had answers to every run the Gamecocks made. In the end the Baylor Bears were too much for South Carolina, as the Bears got a much needed road win, 92-84.

The Baylor squad will head back on the road to face Southern in Baton Rouge, Louisiana before heading home for the holidays.
