Going into Spring - QUARTERBACKS

What quarterback candidates will Guy Morriss and Company have when spring practice arrives? Will it be one already on campus and experienced in Big 12 Warfare, or someone yet to arrive? Questions abound as the Bears focus on recruiting right now, but as spring nears and thoughts return to "players at hand," where will the focus be? This is the first of a series based on returning players who will make up the spring roster.

Reports are that senior quarterbacks Guy Tomcheck and Josh Zachry will not return for their final year of eligibility. Guy is graduating and due to the number of severe concussions, Josh has retired from the game. We certainly wish both of these young men great success in their future endeavors.

Aaron Karas, 6-1, 195, Jr-2L - Aaron, without question, brings the most playing experience to the position. Much will depend on the new system and how quickly he is able to pick it up.

Davon Vinson, 6-3, 225, So-1L - Davon was redshirted last season, but played in several games as a true freshman in 2001. While his exposure was certainly limited, Davon showed flashes of athletic ability that fans savored. Davon possess the pysical attributes that fans like in a quarterback; good height, size, and mobility.

Shawn Bell, 6-1, 185, Fr-RS - Shawn has had his redshirt season and looks forward to competing with the established talent. He had a stellar high school career finishing a third " all-time" in Texas high school football with 8,437 career passing yards and 525 career completions. As a senior, Shawn posted almost a 70% completion percentage, completing 224 of 324 passes for 3,308 yards, 33 touchdowns, with only 7 interceptions. He also rushed 236 yards and four touchdowns.

Ryan Jeffrey, 6-4, 190, So-Sq - Surprised? Well, Ryan asked to be moved to receiver when it appeared he would only get playing time at that position, however this is a new coaching staff, and they may want another look at this tall, athletic quarterback. He is certainly one of the fastest quarterback candidates, and who knows, given another shot at quarterback, he could surprise. In any event, it's certainly worth considering him enough to be included in the mix at this point.

That is it for scholarship quarterbacks on campus and ready to go. However, there are also several walk-on candidates to list. Since there is not much background information available on these guys, you'll find them listed in alphabetical order except for the first one. The reason is because when Karas was injured last season and Zachry was out for the year, there was some speculation on whether Vinson or Bell might have to have their redshirt seasons burned at so late a date. However, then head coach Kevin Steele said that rather than burn anyone's shirt, he would most likely go to walk-on Chris Neilson, and therefore, he is listed first.

Chris Neilson, 6-0, 195, Jr-Sq, Amarillo High
Lee Chandler, 6-1, 185, Fr-RS, East Plano
Ryan Frazier, 6-0, 200, Fr-RS, Klein High
Mark Murphy, 6-2, 180, Fr-RS, Kingwood High
Mitch Pruitt, 5-10, 192, Jr-Sq, Euless Trinity High
Bryce Williams, 5-11, 185, Fr-RS, Sonora High
