High School Football News and Notes: Oct 9

Baylor commits continue in action in the October 9 weekend of the high school football season. Come see what big game awaits Matt Ritchey and Big Spring, and learn a lot more about the matchups these future Bears will be facing this week, only here at BearsIllustrated.com.

Here is our breakdown of each Baylor commit for the October 9th weekend of the high school football season.

Waco Midway (Ahmad Dixon) at University: Midway is 4-1 and ranked #10 in the State in the AP 4A poll. They lost to Corsicana last week, 40-31 - in an odd, lightning delayed game. Corsicana wideout Javonte Hines got behind Dixon a couple of times for big plays. Midway's defensive coordinator Calvin Hill is suspended for this week's game essentially because he bumped into an official on the sideline - he was ejected last week and has a mandatory 1 game suspension. University is 4-1 and beat the same Corsicana team Midway just lost to. Last year, Midway beat down University 31-0.

Roosevelt (Dominique Henderson) vs. New Braunfels: Roosevelt lost to Reagan last week 38-29. New Braunfels creamed Lee last week, but lost to a fairly weak Churchill team the week before.

Katy (Sam Holl) vs. Morton Ranch: Katy is currently at #8 in the 5A State AP Poll. They are coming off of a bye from last week. Morton Ranch has not won a game - you might remember me posting about all the controversey there about a month ago - and TCU commit QB/ATH Sam Carter. I don't expect Katy to have any issues winning this game.

Allen (Luke Burleson) at Boyd: This game was played last night; Allen won 45-21. Allen is currently #7 in the State, and tied for 1st place in their district. Looks like they had plenty of offense against Boyd, including big rushing and passing totals - Allen's QB had 4 TD's, 80 yards rushing, and 190 yards passing.

Lancaster (Tyler Stephenson) vs. Forney: Lancaster is a team that's struggling at 3-3 - once ranked in the State polls, they are nowhere to be found now. They were able to knock off Poteet last week (31-7) - and apparently Poteet looked pretty bad. Lancaster had their subs in by the 3rd quarter, and Poteet really didn't try to air it out much at all.

Abilene Cooper (TC Robinson) at Hereford. AC was off last week. Hereford has QB Parker Bridwell - of course Bridwell being a guy we have discussed before and who attended a Baylor camp over the summer. Bridwell has thrown for over 1,200 yards and 14 TD's (also thrown 7 ints). Hereford is undefeated so far, while AC is 2-3. AC has been giving up a ton of points, so would be nice to see their defense step up to the plate.

Waco Connally (Troy Baker) at Lorena: Connally is struggling at 1-4, while Lorena is 3-2. Connally was destroyed last week by Broam Hart - an uncommitted RB who gained 256 yards and 2 TD's against Connally.

Big Spring (Matt Ritchey) at Frenship. Big Spring was off last week. They are undefeated to this point, and take on a 4-1 Frenship team. Big Spring has finally cracked the polls, coming in just in front of Midway at #9 in the 4A State AP Poll. Frenship was picked to win the district preseason - so this should be a good matchup for Matt and Big Spring.

(NOTE: Big Spring, Abilene Cooper, Frenship and Hereford are the projected playoff teams from District 4-4A - so these last few games I highlighted are some BIG ones for this district)

Midland (Antwan Goodley) at Coronado: Midland is 3-2, Coronado 2-3. Midland beat Monterey 27-19 last week, which included a Goodley 65 yd TD reception. He finished with 3 catches for 70 yds.

Midlothian (Eddie Johnson) at Corsicana. Midlothian is 1-4 and struggling. Corsicana is 2-3. However, Corsicana is coming off of a signature win over Midway, while Midlothian is coming off a 1 point loss to Cleburne where Cleburne converted a TD and 2 point conversion late to take the lead. Johnson has 25 receptions for 492 yds and 5 TD's on the season.

Baytown Lee (Xavier Ruben and Tim Smith) at Sterling. Baytown is 1-4 on the season, and Sterling is 2-2.
