High School Football News and Notes: Oct 16

Baylor commits continue in action in the October 16 weekend of the high school football season. Come see what stud Antwan Goodley next week and learn more about the matchup of Ahmad Dixon vs. Eddie Johnson coming up tonight. You will learn a lot more about the matchups these future Bears will be facing this week, only here at BearsIllustrated.com.

Here is our breakdown of each Baylor commit for the October 16th weekend of the high school football season.

Waco Midway (Ahmad Dixon) at Midlothian: Midway is 5-1 and ranked #9. They beat University last week 20-0. Dixon intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yds for a TD. University absolutely could not do anything against Midway's defense - and ended up with only 5 rushing yards. Midlothian is 1-5 and giving up way too many points each game. Eddie Johnson has 4 catches for 28 yards last week in a loss to Corsicana. Should be fun to see future Bears Dixon and Johnson go against each other.

Roosevelt (Dominique Henderson) at Johnson: Roosevelt lost to New Braunfels last week and is now 4-2. They gave up 440 yards to New Braunfels. Johnson is 4-3 and just smashed Lee 41-0 and Churchill the week before 37-17.

Katy (Sam Holl) at Seven Lakes on Saturday: Katy smashed Morton Ranch last week 39-0. Morton Ranch is 0-6, and Katy and Holl only gave up 118 total yards. That puts Katy at 5-1 overall now. Morton was only 2 for 13 for the entire game passing - and those completions didn't come until the last 2 minutes of the game. Seven Lakes is 3-3 and 2-0 in district.

Allen (Luke Burleson) vs Plano: Allen is demolishing teams right now - winning their last two district games by a combined score of 100-27. Part of the reason is the play of the line and Burleson - but they also have a great QB in Arizona commit Matt Brown.

Lancaster (Tyler Stephenson): Lancaster lost 16-8 to Forney last week, and are really struggling at 3-4. Good time for their bye, which they have this week.

Abilene Cooper (T.C. Robinson) vs. Lake View. Cooper beat Hereford 20-14 last week. We talked about their defense needing to step up, and they did only giving up those 14 points. Hereford was 5-0 going into the game, but Cooper held them 150 yards below their typical average. Lake View beat Plainview last week - and is tied with Cooper and Big Spring for the district lead right now. Lake View's offense averages over 200 yards a game passing, so this will be yet another test for Robinson and the Cooper defense.

Waco Connally (Troy Baker) at La Vega: Things weren't looking good last week for Connally, but they rose up and beat Lorena 36-28. This week they take on La Vega - who is 2-4 just like them.

Big Spring (Matt Ritchey) vs. Plainview. Big Spring is still undefeated after beating Frenship 28-14 last week and is up to #7 in the polls. Ritchey is leading the team in tackles averaging over 12 per game, and is also leading the team in sacks. Ritchey continues to do it all for Big Spring, scoring on a 36 yard pass from Tyler Tannehill and finishing with 3 catches for 65 yards, 4 rushes for 11 yards in addition to his defensive work. Plainview is 2-4 on the season, and will really be geared up to try to pull the upset against Big Spring.

Midland (Antwan Goodley) vs Amarillo: Midland beat Coronado last week 38-23. It's time to get excited about Antwan Goodley if you're not already. Kid is explosive. Against Coronado, he had kickoff returns of 84 and 78 yards, both for TD's. Here is what mywestexas.com had to say about the second TD:

Before anyone could catch their breath, Goodley unleashed a surefire play-of-the-year nominee. He shook off numerous tackles before exploding through a narrow crease for 78 yards and his second kick return for a touchdown.

"I was just trying to make a play," Goodley said. "I think (the second kick return) was the best play of my high school career. It's fun to see them get the momentum and we come back and make a big play."

Goodley also finished with 3 catches for 39 yards. Tonight they play Amarillo, who is a tough 4-1 team.

Midlothian (Eddie Johnson) vs. Midway. See above.

Baytown Lee (Xavier Ruben and Tim Smith) vs. West Brook. Baytown Lee is a team that is really struggling, and lost their game already last night to West Brook - 45-0. They are now 2-5 on the season, including 1-2 in district.
