JUCO Standout Headed To Baylor

BearsIllustrated.com's interview with JUCO Anthony Gonzales details why he chose the Baylor Bears and how this is a reunion of sorts for he and Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Anthony Gonzales, a 6-5 260 pound defensive end, enjoyed an illustrious high school career at Copperas Cove High School in Copperas Cove, Texas. However, because of his grades, he was unable to qualify so he decided to head to Blinn Junior College to continue his football career.

"Blinn was a place I figured I could go to and be successful at," Gonzales told JCFootball.com recently. "I wanted to go there to have a chance to play some ball and to get things straight academically and I've been able to do both of those because of the coaches and the support the program gives us."

The talented defensive end made use of his time at Blinn Junior College on the field and in the classroom. With his grades in order, Gonzales holds over 15 scholarship offers to play Division I football. Recently, however, Gonzales decided to end his recruitment and pledge his services to the Baylor Bears of the Big 12 Conference.

"It's a nice campus. It's a very nice campus. I like the environment I was in, and the people that I was around. The coaches, the players, the students of Baylor, that all played a part in making my final decision," says Gonzales.

Gonzales explains that Coach Theo Young, Baylor's defensive ends coach, did most of the recruiting of Gonzales. Additionally, Baylor head coach Art Briles made a positive impact on Gonzales as well.

"I like the way [Coach Briles] thinks. He's a passionate man. I could tell that he cares. He is a coach that I would like to be around for a couple of more years," Gonzales stated.

Gonzales, a former high school teammate of current Baylor quarterback, Robert Griffin III, talks about playing together on the same team.

"I played with Robert junior and senior year, so, that kind of played a factor in it, too. I wouldn't mind playing with him again," says Gonzales.

With offers from schools such as Arizona, Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Southern Miss, Texas Tech, and Utah, among others, how strong is Gonzales' commitment to the Baylor Bears?

"This is it. I am already committed to Baylor. I am all the way in."
