Bears Cruise To Victory, 34-3

The Baylor Bears opened their 2010 campaign with a victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday.

The Baylor Bears opened their 2010 campaign with a victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday. The Bears' got an early lead and never looked back as they defeated their in-state foe 34-3.

The game saw the highly anticipated return of Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin did not disappoint in going 19-36 for 242 yards and two touchdown passes. The talented sophomore signal-caller showed no ill effects from his off-season knee surgery. On the day Griffin also rushed for 59 yards including a 30 yard touchdown scamper in the 1st quarter to put the Bears up by two touchdowns.

Baylor running back Jay Finley, coming back from off-season ankle surgery, got things going in the second half of the contest with a 44-yard burst to paydirt in the 3rd quarter. Finley finished the day with 51 yards on 6 carries.

The Bears' spread the ball around through the air all evening on the Bearkats. No Baylor receiver recorded more than 3 receptions as 12 different receivers caught passes. Tight end Brad Taylor hauled in 2 catches for 69 yards including a 68-yard catch and run for a score. Terrance Williams contributed with a 23-yard touchdown reception in the 2nd quarter and finished the game with 2 catches for 28 yards.

The Bears defense played well and was led by Tevin Elliot who recorded 7 solo tackles and 2 tackles for loss on the night. Defensive lineman Phil Taylor also had 2 tackles for loss for the game. The Bears held the Bearkats to under 200 yards total offense, and sacked Bearkat quarterback Bryan Randolph twice.

The Bears next play Buffalo on September 11th at 6:00 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas.
