Broncos Struggle to Win Over San Jose State

No matter what your record is, once a team begins conference play, the going gets tough. Boise State's volleyball team was stretched to five sets by the 5-8 San Jose State Spartans last night in California but prevailed in the end. The Boise State volleyball team was tested by 5-8 San Jose State last night in California, with the Broncos victorious but taken to five sets for only the second time of the seas. Coach Shawn Garus's team edged the Spartans 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9) to win their Western Athletic Conference opener.

Seniors Alisha Young and Sadie Maughan and sophomores Fiona Jones and Liz Harden all tallied 12 kills to lead the Broncos, 13-2 overall. Young was impressive at the net with a career-best 10 blocks while Jones had 13 digs. Breann Nesselhuf was her usual dependable self with 46 assists. Alex Akana led San Jose State with 16 kills while Katie Turned had 23 digs and Caitlin Andrade racked up 50 assists.

Boise State remains on the road for a Saturday contest with Fresno State at 8 p.m. The Broncos are planning a "Blue-Out" for their WAC home opener with Idaho Wednesday, September 29.
