Bronco Men Get 7th at Western Regionals

Boise State track coaches J.W. Hardy and Brad Wick are beginning to build the same thing in Boise that Hardy presided over at Northern Arizona--a top notch cross country program. In just the second year at Boise State, Hardy guided the men to a 7th-place finish at the NCAA Western Regionals, the best finish in school history.

Boise State's men's cross country team recorded the best finish at the NCAA West Region Championships in school history yesterday in Eugene, finishing 7th.  Boise State finished behind #3 Oregon , #2 Stanford, #22 California , #13 Portland , Arizona State and Washington and ahead of Pac-10 teams UCLA, Washington State and Arizona .  The Bronco women earned a spot in the Regionals for the first time since 2005 and placed 21st out of 31 teams.

"Our men had a terrific day," exclaimed head cross country and track and field coach J.W. Hardy.   "They made a significant jump in our program with their seventh-place finish. Our women gained valuable experience and I am excited about the future of their program."

Sophomore Jeff Howard led the 10th-seeded Broncos to the impressive performance.  Howard finished 17th individually with a time of 30:32.05 in his first 10k race of the season.  The promising Howard showed dramatic improvement over a freshman finish of 54th.  Senior Sawyer Bosch was 35th with a time of 30:50.89.  Scott Foley and Drew O'donoghue-McDonald were 57th (31:13.47) and 59th (31:15.61), respectively.  The Bronco team placed six runners in the top 100 yesterday as Brian Pierre and Allan Schroeder finished the distance in 31:41.94.  Senior Brad Bogdan finished with a time of 31:55.67.

#11
Washington upset three teams to capture the women's title with 73 points.  #7 Oregon finished second with 77, #4 Stanford was third with 86 points and #6 Arizona captured fourth with 90.

Freshman Emma Bates led the Bronco charge with a 77th-place finish.  Bates navigated the 6-k course in 21:33.21.

The University of Portland 's Trevor Dunbar won the men's title, battling Arizona 's Stephen Sambu to the finish.   Dunbar clocked a time of 29:57.89, while Sambu ran a time of 29:57.95.  The University of Oregon 's Jordan Hasay was the top women's finisher, earning a solid win in a time of 20:01.90.
