The Rice Era Begins With a Win

Boise State opened its 2010-11 basketball season on a winning note, with the Broncos downing Western State 78-52 in Taco Bell Arena. The victory marked the debut of Leon Rice as Head Coach of the Broncos.

Boise State ushered in the "Rice Era" with a solid 78-52 victory over Western State last night in Taco Bell Arena.

La'Shard Anderson led the way with 20 points and six assists while Robert Arnold added 15 for the Broncos. A 15-0 run allowed Coach Leon Rice's team to build a 46-24 halftime lead. An up-tempo offense and aggressive defense forced 21 Western State turnovers and kept the visitors at bay. The Broncos gave an early hint of their shooting prowess. Boise State was an even 50% (25-50) from the floor, a sizzling 21-25 from the free-throw line (84%) and hit 7-of-16 three-point tries (44%).

Rice signaled 14 players onto the floor for Boise State. Bronco fans got to see the debut of six new players, including Jeff Elorriaga and Ryan Watkins, each of whom scored six points. Weylan Towns paced Western with 18 points with Martin Graham contributing 15.

Boise State travels to San Diego and UC Davis next weekend.
