Boise State Stacks Up Well Vs. Top 25 Teams

Pundits got Boise State where they wanted with one loss at the end of the season--all the way down to #10. Yet a comparison of records against Top 25 opponents shows that a grand total of four teams had better records than Boise State.

The 2010 college football regular season is history and now that the dust has settled, its time to examine the results about schedules.

It turns out that only nine teams in the nation played more Top 25 teams (those that finished in the BCS Top 25) than Boise State .  The Broncos were 2-1, defeating #13 Virginia Tech and #24 Hawai'i before falling to #15 Nevada .  For all the hoopla and whining criticisms, it seems the Bronco schedule was tougher than most teams, including those ranked directly in front of them.

For instance, Oregon , which will play for the national title, played a grand total of one game against a Top 25 opponent, beating Stanford.  The two Pac-10 teams propped each other up, as #4 Stanford's only Top 25 opponent was Oregon .  Wisconsin , #5 in the final BCS Standings, had a record of 1-1, defeating #6 Ohio State but losing to #9 Michigan State .  #6Ohio State's ranking is one of the great mysteries—the Buckeyes' only game against a Top 25 opponent ( Wisconsin ) resulted in a loss.  #9 Michigan State soared to its #9 ranking by virtue of one win over a Top 25 opponent—also Wisconsin.

As one might expect, #1 Auburn and the rest of the Southeastern Conference fared the best in this comparison.  The Tigers were 6-0 vs. ranked opponents, rolling through a schedule that included #20 South Carolina , #8 Arkansas , #11 LSU, #16 Alabama , #21 Mississippi State and South Carolina again in the SEC Championship.  Arkansas was 4-2, downing #17 Texas A & M, South Carolina , LSU and Mississippi State but losing to Alabama and Auburn .  LSU went 3-2, defeating Mississippi State , #22 West Virginia and Alabama but losing to Auburn and Arkansas .  #7 Oklahoma was the only other team with more Top 25 wins than Boise State , defeating #23 Florida State , #14 Oklahoma State and #18 Nebraska but losing to #12 Missouri and A & M.

Missouri matched Boise State 's record against Top 25 teams at 2-1, defeating Texas A & M and Oklahoma but losing to Nebraska .

Boise State will take on its 4th Top 25 team of the season when they challenge #19 Utah December 22 in the Las Vegas Bowl.
