Upland HS K Jake Van Ginkel (Upland, CA) committed to Boise State last week and figures to be a strong contender for the starting job heading into the 2011 season opener against Georgia. What put Boise State over the top? Well, he simply felt it was the right time to commit.

"Well, Coach Choate called me the next morning after we talked the last time," he said. "He asked me if I wanted to be their guy and I decided to commit," he added.

Van Ginkel's accuracy and leg strength are simply remarkable. As a senior, he was 14-17 with a long of 52. The future Bronco says it's all in the mind-set and it's much more of a mental game as opposed to a physical one.

"Kicking is about 90% mental," he stated. "I was always taught that every kick needs to be the same whether it's a PAT or a 60 yard FG. You have to have good thoughts and imagine it going through the uprights."

Jake will get a visit from his future Head Coach this week as Chris Petersen plans to drop by for an in-home visit.

"I've been talking to Coach Petersen a couple times a week," he said. "He's coming over on Wednesday to see me at school and to have dinner at my house. I'm real excited about it. It'll be good to sit down and have a conversation with him."

Van Ginkel (6'1, 185) will visit the Boise State campus for the first time this weekend. Being a commit, he wants to get a good feel for the campus and the place he'll call home for the next four years.

"I just want to get a good look at the school," he said. "You know, see what's going on, where I'll stay at for the next four years, and everything like that," he added.
