Visit Report: Jake Van Ginkel

Upland HS K Jake Van Ginkel (Upland, CA) committed to Boise State just a couple weeks ago and was on campus last weekend for his official visit. How did it go? He spoke to BroncoCountry.com about his official visit to Boise State and his future as a Bronco.

Upland HS K Jake Van Ginkel (Upland, CA) committed to Boise State just a couple weeks ago and was on campus last weekend for his official visit. Van Ginkel had never been to Boise before, so one could say this visit was "extra" important. By all accounts, the visit was a success.

"It went really good. I loved the school," he said. "Overall, it was a good welcome for me at the school. I really liked seeing the campus since that's where I'll be for the next four years," he added.

Last season, Kyle Brotzman handled both the punting and kicking duties. This allowed Brad Elkin to redshirt and it appears he will handle the punting duties heading into 2011.

"I know that Brad Elkin redshirted and I think Coach Choate wants him to take the punting job for that first year," he stated. "Someone will have to step up and do it after he's gone. I know I'll have to work on that."

Van Ginkel will arrive in Boise for summer workouts on June 27th. The future Bronco will have opportunity to compete for early playing time and says whoever works the hardest will earn the starting job heading into the season opener against Georgia.

"I'm excited about it since no one has the spot yet," he said. "Whoever puts in the most work and does the best job will start. Coach Choate said we're going to have a lot of work to do in a short period of time to get ready for game one."

Van Ginkel holds the California state HS record for most FGs (39) made over a four year career. He was 14/17 as a senior with a long of 52. That means accuracy certainly isn't an issue for the talented K and neither is distance. So, what aspect will he focus on prior to his arrival on campus?

"I'm going to focus on kickoffs," Van Ginkel said. "I want to be able to place it down inside the five and near the corner. That's going to be my main focus. I also want to keep working on my FGs, become consistent, more powerful."

Signing Day is just a few days away and Jake says he's ready to make it official.

"I'm real excited for Signing Day. I'm ready to make it official, get it over and done with," he said. "I'll be signing at the school with a couple other players in the gym. I'll also be doing a live radio talk show in Boise that day," he added.
