Fruitland HS LB Joey Martarano (Fruitland, ID) is projected to be one of the top 2013 prospects in the State of Idaho, but decided to end his recruitment early when an offer from the home-state Broncos came along. The talented LB described Boise State as a 'perfect fit' and is currently preparing for what should be an outstanding junior season.

"I felt like it was a perfect fit," he said. "I had always been a fan of Boise State and had been working all summer to get an offer from them. They can't talk to me directly, so they set-up a meeting with my coach about three weeks ago. So, Coach Petersen offered me when I was in his office."

"Me and my parents talked about it the whole week before I got the offer and I felt like I'd commit if I got it," he stated. "I decided to commit to Coach Petersen a couple weeks after I got the offer. He was pretty pumped."

"It actually means a lot to represent Idaho and play for Boise State," said Martarano. "I'm glad I can keep the family tradition going since my entire family are Bronco fans and my dad (Victor) played for Boise State. I know I'll have a lot of support watching me and I'm really excited about it."

Martarano also happens to be an outstanding baseball player and had already reeled in offers from Utah and Oregon State. In the end, he said he always wanted to play D1 football and the future Bronco will now fulfill that dream.

"Football has always been my #1 sport. That's the one I wanted to play most," he said. "Personally, I think I'm as good at football as I am at baseball. It's close, though."

In 2011, the Fruitland Grizzlies will be looking to go back-to-back and successfully defend their State Championship. The talented LB says the team is looking good heading into fall camp.

"We should be really good this year," said Martarano. "We lost some linemen, but we have some good ones coming in. Our skill guys should be good too. I think we have a good chance to win it."

"Fruitland has always had a good tradition," he said. "Our TE went to Idaho State last year and we've also sent players to Weber State and Utah. I think my dad is the only one that went on to play for Boise State."

What does Martarano (6'3, 220, 4.7) bring to the gridiron?

"I consider myself a real physical player and I like hitting," he said. "That's my biggest thing," he added.

As a junior, he racked up 150 tackles and had 3 INTs for the Fruitland defense.
