As Rondell McNair prepares for his time as a Bronco, the standout defensive end has some lofty goals on his mind. But first he's got to earn a starting position.
"I really want to be All-Mountain West," he said. "The last guy made all-conference, so I'm trying to do the same as he did. They said I have a good chance to start right away, but I've got to work for it."
Explosive off the edge with a quick first step, McNair also played defensive tackle at times and could be asked to do that at Boise as well.
"They asked me to get up to 270 so I can possibly play defensive end and tackle," said the 6'4", 250-pound North Carolina native who had 32 tackles, 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last season. "I don't really care about which position I play, but honestly I feel like defensive end would be my best fit. But I'll help out however I can."
He doesn't report to the Broncos until May 24, but McNair has already been working out with the Boise lifting program. Lifting with his Contra Costa head coach Alonzo Carter, McNair is working out every day to get his weight up to be more stout against the run.
McNair chose the Broncos over Arizona State, Troy, San Jose State, Wyoming, New Mexico, and strong interest from Oregon State because of the ease he felt with the coaching staff and the previous success of head coach Bryan Harsin.
"I really loved the coaching staff," said McNair, who was first-team all-conference and all-region last season. "They made it feel like a family. It felt great.
"I'm really excited about playing for Coach Harsin. It seems like no matter where he goes, he's winning. It should be fun."
