And when it comes to who stands out for the 6-foot-5, 280-pound tackle, Zach Lucas likes his coaches to recruit him the same way he plays the game of football; without mercy.
“I’m really aggressive and I like to use my hands. I like to hit people,” Lucas said. “I like getting letters and seeing what everybody thinks about me. I like to see how they recruit. Some are more laid back, but others are more up front. I like that a lot.”
One of those teams going after the Houston-area recruit aggressively is Boise State, who offered Lucas a scholarship at the beginning of August. He has received all sorts of recruiting letters and pamphlets from the Broncos and is in regular contact with offensive line coach Scott Huff and secondary coach Julius Brown.
“I have been hearing a lot from Boise State lately,” Lucas said. “I got a call from coach Huff Tuesday night. I’ve been messaging him and coach Brown regularly. They’re excited to get me up there and see me. I’m high on their list.”
Lucas was set to visit Boise State the weekend of Sept. 5, but his father had knee surgery and won’t be able to travel. He is in the process of rescheduling the official visit to the City of Trees.
“I definitely will get up there, hopefully soon,” Lucas said.
With offers from Oregon State, Arizona State, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Minnesota, Missouri, Rice, Texas State, Fresno State, Colorado in addition to the Broncos, Lucas has a tough decision ahead of him and has no timetable for a decision. Currently, Boise State, Missouri and Oregon State stand out, and he plans on visiting all three universities.
“Boise State is really high on my list right now,” he said. “Oregon State and Missouri as well. I will definitely visit those three and I’m still waiting to see on other ones.”
