Boise State started with being 0-3 in the Mountain West play, fans were beginning to worry when the Broncos went on a 4 game losing streak starting in late December, so you can imagine the collective sigh of relief that comes out of Bronco Nation, knowing that their team is back and winning games. “Obviously people were out there thinking we were going to have a bad season but I don't think anyone in the locker room thought we were going down from here”, forward Nick Duncan said in an interview with KBOI2. “Nobody was really worried what the rest of the season would hold for us”.
The Broncos (16-6, 6-3) are currently on a six-game winning streak making them third place in the Mountain West. Their streak comes after winning games against UNLV, New Mexico, San Jose State, Air Force, Colorado State and Utah State. The performance that some of the team superstars Derrick Marks, James Webb III and Nick Duncan have been having has also helped the Broncos gain back their momentum.
According to some bracketology experts, if the Broncos win Sunday, it might be enough to bump them into the NCAA tournament field. What did coach Leon Rice have to say about that little piece of information? “If you told these guys that after those first three games of conference, they’d be pretty pleased with it, and we’re pleased with it as coaches,” Rice said in an interview with Paul Gerke with KIVI-Boise ”Our goal was to fight our way back in, one game at a time, and I think now we’ve done that. We’ve fought our way back in. We’re in a position, now you’ve got to take advantage of that position”.
The game against San Diego State (18-5, 8-2) is not going to be an easy one. The Aztecs were tied with Wyoming for first place in the Mountain West Conference until Saturday's surprising Air Force win over the Cowboys, now the Aztecs are playing for sole possession of First Place in the MWC. Boise State and San Diego have played each other 8 times since Boise State has joined the Mountain West. The last time these two teams met was in February of last year, San Diego came back after a 14-point deficit beating the Broncos 67-65. San Diego is no stranger to pulling out close games, in fact, in 7 of the games the two teams have played San Diego has won by 6 points or less. However, their recent win streak has the Broncos feeling confident that if this game mirrors those of previous seasons the result will be a Boise State victory. “We keep our composure throughout the whole game and we find a way to get it done”, said sophomore James Webb III.
“They are still a lot more athletic than us,” coach Rice told KBOI2 when asked about playing San Diego.“We’ve got James Webb III and they’ve got four or five of them”. Theres no denying that these two teams are not going to make it easy for each other to win, this Mountain West matchup is going to be a fight to the finish.
