Boise State QB Arrested On Misdemeanor Charge

Ryan Finley, the presumptive front-runner for the vacant Boise State starting QB spot, was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of being a Minor in possession of Alcohol, and Resist/Obstruct. Both charges are misdemeanors, and he is not in the custody of the police at this time. What happens from here is unknown, but any suspension could have a major impact on the Washington game.

Boise State Redshirt Sophomore Quarterback, Ryan Finley, was arrested early Saturday morning by Boise Police.

Finley is the only quarterback on the Boise State team with any Division 1 experience, and served as the backup QB last season to now departed Grant Hedrick, which made him the default favorite to win the starting job over the Spring/Summer, but this arrest could throw all that into disarray and open the door for one of the other three QB's on squad to step in and supplant Finley as the odds on favorite.

At this point, although likely, it is unknown if there will be any team punishment or if that punishment will include any game suspensions. However, in Boise State's history, an arrest for a misdemeanor has resulted in an 'in house' punishment and also, at times, a loss of game eligibility. If Finley is suspended for the opening game against Washington and former Head Coach Chris Petersen, the results could be a monumental shift for the Broncos.

 The Blue and Orange Store

Brett Rypien, the highly touted true Freshman, could have redshirted if Finley won the starting job, but if Finley is lost for a game or two.. does Boise State opt to play Rypien right away? Do they go with highly successful JC Transfer, Tommy Stuart-who has reportedly looked very good this Spring, and give him the chance to move ahead of Finley permanently? Do they give the wild card, Cannon-Armed Redshirt Freshman Alex Ogle, a chance to win the job?

At this point, it's not certain that Finley will even miss the Washington game, but that possibility now definitely exists. has been covering Boise State sports since 2002.
