Two weeks ago, Prosper (Texas) running back Robert Mahone was on the verge of committing to in-state school Southern Methodist University.
But as the date of his announcement neared, the 6-foot, 190-pound athlete began to feel uncomfortable about the pace and timing of the decision, and he backed off.
Mahone continued to look and research, and made a few visits and to get a better feel for what he was looking for in a college. Ultimately, the lure of the blue turf at Boise State won him over and Mahone committed to the Broncos Saturday night.
"I felt like it was too early. I felt kind of rushed," he said of his near-commitment weeks ago. "I felt like I needed more time to make the right decision and find the school that fit best for me. I visited Houston and some other schools, but it felt like Boise State was the best fit.
"I am very excited. I'm blessed to have this opportunity. I'm happy to be on board and to be a Bronco."
Mahone chose Boise State over offers from SMU, Colorado State, Arkansas State, Houston and Louisiana-Lafayette, among others. He mentioned the culture of winning as to why he decided to be a Bronco, as well as the success of a former Boise State stand-out tailback.
"The tradition up there and the relationships I have with the coaches won me over," Mahone said. "The atmosphere at the games seems incredible. I can't wait to be a part of it.
"I'm pretty sure Jay Ajayi influenced my decision. Seeing him do what he did makes me believe that I can do the same thing."
Mahone is the sixth member of Boise State's 2016 recruiting class, a group of athletes who are already bonding months before their commitments become official.
