Boise State's California Connection

The state of California has contributed greatly to the success of the Boise State football team over the years. There are 45 players from the state on the 2015 Bronco roster.

The Golden State of California has indeed been golden for Boise State football.  It is a pipeline established decades ago by former Bronco coach Tony Knap, and players from California have dominated the Boise State football roster ever since.  No less than half of Boise State's 10 best running backs are from California:  Ian Johnson, #2 in career rushing, Doug Martin (#6), Rodney Webster (#7), Jeremy Avery (#8), and David Mikell (#10).  Mikell also holds the school record for career kickoff return average.

The list of former Bronco greats from California includes Ryan Dinwiddie, #2 in career passing yards and passing efficiency, Austin Pettis, #2 in career receptions, Gabe Franklin, #3 in career interceptions, John Rade, #6 in career tackles for loss, current Bronco running backs coach Lee Marks, who ranks #3 in career kickoff return average, current linebackers coach Andy Avalos and Ray Santucci, #5 and #6, respectively, in career tackles, Ryan Winterswyk, #4 in career tackles for loss and #5 in career sacks, former defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, (#2 in career tackles for loss), Brandyn Thompson, tied with current California Broncos Donte Deayon and Darian Thompson for #8 in career interceptions, Quinton Jones and Kerry Lawyer, #2 and #3 in career punt return average at Boise State, and Roberto Moran, who continues to hold the school record for the longest field goal at 56 yards.
