Thompson Part Of Cohesive Defensive Backfield

Many members of the Boise State defense that enabled the Broncos to win their third Fiesta Bowl in nine years are back this fall, including senior safety Darian Thompson. Thompson talked with the local media about the upcoming season.

Boise State safety Darian Thompson returns for his senior season with the Broncos and people have taken notice.  Thompson, a CBSSports.com Second Team All-American  last year, is on Watch Lists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Jim Thorpe Award (awarded each year to the nation's best collegiate defensive back), and the Chuck Bednarnik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (given annually to the nation's best collegiate defensive player).

Thompson needs five interceptions to tie Gabe Franklin for third all-time at Boise State.  He said his preparation has been the key to him being in the right place at the right time.  Darian collected seven picks last year, tied for the Mountain West Conference lead and third in the nation.

But interceptions tell only part of the story for this talented Bronco defensive back.  He led the Boise State secondary with 71 tackles (50 of them solo) last season.  Thompson registered 10 tackles in Boise State's win over #10 Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

Thompson and the Broncos host the University of Washington next Friday, September 4 in Albertsons Stadium.
