Lady Broncos Beat Portland State 3-0

Much is expected of the Boise State volleyball team this season, and the Broncos wore out host Portland State tonight, 25-10, 28-26, 25-15.

SPOKANE, Washington--The Boise State volleyball team put on an impressive showing tonight in their season opener at Portland State in the Northwest Challenge, taking all three sets from the Vikings, 25-10, 28-26 and 25-15.

Coach Shawn Garus' experienced squad was simply too much for Portland State.  The Broncos opened the match with a 25-10 drilling in the opening set.  Portland State assumed control in the early going of the second set, 13-7.  But little by little, the Lady Broncos whittled away at the lead, getting numerous blocks for points at the net, finally tying it at 22.  The two teams fought back and forth, with the Broncos saving two set points, then tying the match again at 26.  Boise State then scored the next two points on a Viking error and a kill by Maddy O'Donnell to take the set.  Portland State, which had spent so much energy and emotion in nearly winning the set, was down 0-2.

Boise State prevailed in the third set 25-15 to open the 2015 season on a winning note.  Sophomore Sierra Nobley led the way with 15 kills (shots for winning points), while senior Sarah Baugh had 10 and Maddy O'Donnell 8.

The Broncos will have to be at the top of their game tomorrow afternoon--Boise State challenges #10 Washington, which sported a 31-3 record last season.  That match gets underway at 1 p.m. Mountain time.
