Defense Carrying Boise State Bronco Volleyball Team To New Heights

Known for their offensive excitement, the Boise State volleyball team is using defense to elevate their game.

The focus on defense for the Boise State volleyball team has paid off this season.  It's showing up in the Broncos' record--winners of 9 of their last 10 matches, and it's showing up in the Mountain West Conference statistics.

Coach Shawn Garus' team has been known for its offensive prowess, spiking home thunderous shots across the net for points, and the Broncos lead the nation in both assists and kills per set.  This season, Garus has been drilling the importance of defense to his players:  digs (getting the ball before it hits the floor), serves (where a strong serve can make a big difference in how the point is played out) and blocks at the net.  The Bronco players are getting the message, as junior blocker Maddy O'Donnell points out in the video above.

"Defense is something that we're consistently working on in the gym with our block and our floor defense--setting up a consistent block, and getting good touches off of our blocks," assistant coach Candy Murphy said.

"It's extremely important," senior Katelyn Kinghorn added.  "That's one thing we've really been working on in practice--defense and stopping the other side."

The Broncos have made great strides this year in those three areas.  Ranked near the bottom of the conference earlier in the year, Boise State has risen to #3 in the Mountain West in digs with 14.88 per set, fourth in service aces (1.27 per set) and is now sixth in blocks with 1.98 per set.
