Bronco Wrestlers Split Two

Boise State's wrestling team nearly completed an undefeated road trip, with a tough loss to #20 Cal Poly last night being the only blemish in the six match swing.

Boise State's wrestling team split the final two matches of its four-day swing through California, defeating Purdue University 19-14 before a 24-14 PAC-10 loss at Cal Poly ended the Broncos' six-match winning streak. The Broncos went 5-1 on their road trip to improve their overall dual record to 6-2. Boise State is 2-1 in Pac-10 matches this season.

Ben Cherrington's major decision over Jake Murphy (9-0) in the 157-pound weight class propelled Boise State to its win over Purdue. Coach Greg Randall's squad won six individual matches against the Boilermakers.

After just a few hours rest, Boise State headed into a tough league match against homestanding Cal Poly. A pin in the opening match at 141 pounds and an injury default in the evening's final match at 133 pounds produced half of Cal Poly's 24 points. Boise State's Scott Jorgensen was trailing to Darrell Vasquez, 6-2, when he suffered an injury and was unable to finish the 133-pound match. Jorgensen is the only wrestler to defeat Vasquez a defeat this season when he produced a 6 -5 victory in early December at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Cherrington, Casey Phelps at 197 pounds and heavyweight Andy Patrick were victorious in both matches. Cherrington put away Cal Poly's Ryan Williams in his second major decision of the day, Phelps posted a 4-2 decision over Nathan Moore of Purdue and a 22-9 major over Matt Ishler of Cal Poly, while Patrick downed Aaron Keough 3-2 in double overtime before edging Cal Poly's Arturo Basulto 4-3.

Boise State returns home for a pair of PAC-10 clashes against Oregon and Oregon State. The Bronco wrestlers host Oregon Friday night at 7 in Taco Bell Arena as part of this year's "Beauty and the Beast" event in conjunction with the Bronco gymnastics team. The clash with the Beavers of Oregon State will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Bronco Gym.
