Oh So Close

Thanks to several close individual wins, Oregon escaped from Boise with a 17-16 win in PAC-10 wrestling last night.

Oregon held on for a 17-16 win last night over Boise State in PAC-10 wrestling action at Taco Bell Arena. The contest was part of the action in the annual "Beauty and the Beast" event. Trailing by a count of 17-13 heading into the heavyweight match, the Broncos needed a major decision to tie the match. Boise State's Andy Patrick held a commanding 11-3 lead (including the advantage in riding time) with less than one minute remaining. However, Oregon's Chris Deamon scored a two-point takedown to trim the lead and the match ended with Patrick scoring a 12-5 win, one point short of the margin needed for a major decision.

Boise State falls to 6-3 on the year and 2-2 in the Pac-10. Oregon improves its overall record to 2-3 and is also now 2-2 in the league.

The heroics were needed at the end because Oregon jumped out to a 9-0 lead by winning the first three matches by just one point each. Cory Fish of the Broncos lost a close 9-8 decision at 125 pounds to open the competition. Filling in for the injured Scott Jorgensen, Jeremy Baker performed admirably but lost to Beau Malia of Oregon 5-4. Jordan Brock too lost a close one at 141 pounds to Skyler Woods 11-10.

Tyler Sherfey then got the Broncos on the board at 149 with a resounding 18-6 victory and when Ben Cherrington pinned Jeremy McLaughlin of Oregon at 157 pounds, the Broncos were back in the match. The Ducks responded by winning three key matches in the middle weights. Joey Bracamonte, the nation's #8 wrestler at 165 pounds, took care of business against Boise State's Johnny Nunez by a score of 10-6. Then Chet McBee outpointed Ben Gilliland at 174 and #11 Shane Webster defeated Boise State's K.C. Walsh for the second time this season. Oregon was deducted one team point following the 184 pound match when Shane Webster was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after his 8-2 win over K.C. Walsh. Casey Phelps' win at 197 provided the Broncos with their third win of the night heading into the heavyweight match.

The Broncos are back in action Sunday in Bronco Gym against Oregon State. The Broncos and Beavers will dual at 2 p.m.
