Bronco Gymnasts Turn in Solid Performance

Boise State's gymnastics team came into its own tonight, scoring a blistering 194.225 to easily outdistance Southern Utah and Alaska-Anchorage.

The Boise State gymnastics team put it all together tonight at Taco Bell Arena, scoring a season high 194.225 points to win a tri-meet with Southern Utah and Alaska-Anchorage. Southern Utah scored 193.1 for second and Alaska-Anchorage scored 185.825. The point total represented a big improvement for Boise State, easily bettering the 191.55 scored last week at Cal-Davis. Only 21 teams in the nation have a better score. The Broncos improved their season average to 191.5125, which is 3/10th's of a point outside of last week's Top 25.

Bronco senior Katie Dinsmore captured the all-around title in just the second all-around competition of her career with 38.95. Freshman Shaniece Craft continued to impress, tying with Alaska's Lauren Agostino for first on the vault with a score of 9.825. Freshman Amber Neroes and seniors Kea Cuaresma and Dinsmore were solid as well with 9.775's.

Boise State recorded their most consistent floor routines of the young season, with Cuaresma posting a 9.85 for first, Freshman Taylor Jacob second with 9.775 and Aldrich tying for third with a 7.725. Coach Sam Sandmire's team performed admirably on the beam as well, with juniors Kristin Aldrich and Tara Oberg taking the top two places with a 9.85 and 9.25 respectively.

Southern Utah's Ashley Sharpe took first in the bars with a 9.75, the only apparatus that a Bronco did not win. Boise State's Jacob was second with a 9.725.

As a team, the Broncos won all four events with a 48.8 on vault, 48.25 on bars, 48.5 on beam and 48.675 on floor.

"This performance shows what our potential really is," said Sandmire, " and there is still room for improvement." Boise State competes at Cal State Fullerton next Sunday, February 12.
