Bronco Track Team Headed for WAC Title

The Boise State track team is on pace to capture the second WAC title of the year for the Broncos, following in the footsteps of the Boise State football team. Boise State has an 18-point lead heading in today's competition at Jackson's Track in Nampa and should run away with the team trophy. The Bronco women are in 5th place with a realistic chance at finishing 3rd. Idaho leads that competition, but Louisiana Tech and Utah State should finish 1-2 via their strong running events.

The Boise State men and the Idaho women have leads heading into the final day of competition in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Jackson's Track in Nampa. The Bronco men are expected to extend their lead as running event finals take place today, while the strong sprinters of Louisiana Tech should shoot to the top on the women's side.

Boise State carries an 18 point lead heading into today's action. Through six events, Boise State has 57 points to lead Cal State-Northridge which has 39 points. Utah State and Louisiana Tech are tied for third with 30 points, followed by Idaho with 29 points.

Idaho leads the women's team scoring after six events with 39 points with Boise State scoring 27 points for fifth place. Utah State is currently second with 37 points followed by Cal State Northridge with 32.5 and Hawai'i with 32.

Keron Francis collected his second WAC title in as many days, winning the long jump by leaping 25 feet, 2.75 inches. The Bronco senior won both the indoor and outdoor WAC titles a season ago. Francis had won the 7-event pentathlon the day before with a WAC record 5,184 points. Forest Braden led a 1-2 Bronco finish in the 5,000 meters in 14 minutes, 33.47 seconds. He defended his title in the event and was followed by fellow Bronco Ty Axtman, who covered the distance in 14:39.39. Braden has already qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 13:47.73.

Robin Nixon won the 5,000 meters in her first try at the event this season. Normally a 3,000 meter runner, Nixon captured the WC title with a time of 17:30.26. Nixon is the first Bronco woman to win a running event at the WAC Championships since Boise State joined the league in 2001.

Mattias Jons led three Broncos scoring big points in the shot put. Jons finished third with a throw of 57 feet 2 inches. Staffan Jonsson was fourth at 55-0.75 and junior Erik Wittsitt was sixth at 53-3.75.

Boise State suffered blows when two Broncos favored to win WAC titles did not do so. Antoine Echols, the #1 seed in the men's 400, failed to qualify by 6/100'ths of a second. Aiona Key, the top high jumper in the league, did not compete. No explanation for his absence has been given thus far by the university. However, Gerald Alexander, a starting defensive back for the Bronco football team, made his first appearance in a track meet of his collegiate career and came away with a fourth place finish in the event at 6 feet, 8 inches to collect valuable points for Boise State.

The men's distance medley relay finished the scoring yesterday with a fifth place time of 11:13.99.

Eleni Ypsilanti placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 59-7.00, the third best mark in school history. Eleni-Maria Kafourou finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-5.50, former Boise High School pole vaulter Alina Schimpf placed eighth with a mark of 12-0.00 and in the distance medley relay took seventh with a time of 13:02.53.
