BYU Gymnasts Avenge Loss to Boise State

Three weeks ago, the Boise State gymnastics team shocked #22 BYU 194.775 to 194.525. Tonight, the Cougars took care of business while the Broncos had to count four falls.

The 22nd ranked Brigham Young gymnastics team defeated No. 37 Boise State, 194.85 - 191.85, in a dual meet tonight in Provo. The Broncos had hoped to repeat their solid performance of the night before against Utah State, but the opening routines on bars quickly dissipated those chances. Boise State had to count two falls in the event and ended with a team score of just 47.225. Freshman Taylor Jacob once again led the way with a 9.85, while Courtney Achter rang up a 9.775 and senior Kea Cuaresma finished her routine with a 9.75.

The dependable Bronco vault performers once again came through as freshman Shaniece Craft landed a 9.775 while Katie Dinsmore managed a 9.7. Boise State continued to improve on the floor, with Dinsmore turning in a 9.825 and Cuaresma right behind with a 9.75. However, the Broncos ended the meet as they began, with two more falls on the beam. Dinsmore was able to score a 9.85 and Kristin Aldrich nailed a 9.8.

"I was really happy for Katie." said Boise State coach Sam Sandmire. "She stepped it up in our last two events when we needed her."

The Broncos have a crucial meet scheduled Friday, the Oregon State Salbasgeon Suites Invitational in Corvallis. In addition to host Oregon State, Boise State will compete against Washington, Kentucky and Seattle Pacific. As the Broncos are battling Washington for the sixth and final slot in the West Regional Championships, it's important that they outpoint the Huskies on that night. Plus, in order to earn their first-ever berth in the NCAA National Championships, the Broncos would have to get past West 3rd-seed Oregon State. Stanford and UCLA are the west's two top seeds.
