Cherrington Wins National Championship!

Boise State's Ben Cherrington is the National Champion at 157 pounds. Cherrington defeated Arizona State's Brian Stith 7-3 this evening at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships to capture the title. The wrestling team finished 24th in the nation, becoming the first team at Boise State to finish the season in the top 25 so far this year.

Boise State senior Ben Cherrington won the National Championship at 157 pounds tonight at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City.. Cherrington defeated Brian Stith of Arizona State 7-3 in the championship match. Cherrington, came back from an early season injury to win all 20 of his matches en route to the national title. Cherrington becomes the second Bronco to be crowned national champion, following Kirk White, who won the championship at 165 pounds in 1999.

The championship match between Cherrington and Stith was a rematch of the PAC-10 championship, which the Bronco senior won by pin.

"Ben wrestled just great," said Bronco Coach Greg Randall. "It was a thrill to be there. He dominated his weight class this entire tournament. This was his closest match and he won it by a score of 7-3."

Cherrington and the Broncos will scheduled to arrive in Boise tomorrow (Sunday) at 7:17 p.m. All media, family and friends are invited to greet the happy team at the Boise Airport.
