Broncos Advance To 3rd Round Of Red Lion

The Boise State tennis team rebounded from a tough loss to #20 Notre Dame by winning the first two matches of the Red Lion Spring Break Classic. The Broncos will play #34 South Alabama in the third round Friday at 1:30 at the Appleton Center.

#23 Boise State recorded five straight sets victories to whip Nevada 5-1, at the Appleton Tennis Center this morning, then downed Texas Arlington 4-2 to advance to the third round of the Red Lion Tennis Classic. Boise State is now 12-4 on the season, with wins in 12 of the last 13

With Luke Shields out, all of the Bronco singles players moved up a notch, and Coach Greg Patton's team didn't miss a beat. Senior All-American Thomas Schoeck is as dependable as they come, and his 7-6, 6-4 win this morning advanced his record to 15-6.

Freshman Clancy Shields and junior Piotr Dilaj each won two matches. Shields is 11-4 while Dilaj is 8-1 on the season. Both players joined the Broncos this spring. Sophomore Brent Werbeck won both matches to move his season mark to 15-8 and senior Ehren Vaughan and sophomore Eric Roberson won as well.

"It's pretty scary to play a team like Texas-Arlington when you pull your top player," Head Coach Greg Patton said. "We had four three-set matches, but in the long run this gives us a lot of confidence to be able to survive."

Boise State will play No. 34 South Alabama in the third round of the tournament Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center. South Alabama knocked off Gonzaga 6-0 and the College of Santa Fe, ranked No. 4 in NAIA, by a score of 5-1 en route to its match with the Broncos.

The other semifinal will have Louisiana-Lafayette against Ball State Friday morning at 9 at Appleton.

Fans are requested to park in the "General Permit" areas between Bronco Stadium and Taco Bell Arena.

Texas-Arlington moves into the 5th place bracket and will face College of Santa Fe while Central Florida will battle Western Michigan. Both of those matches will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Gonzaga faces Nevada Friday morning at 9 at Crane Creek and the loser of the Lewis & Clark/Georgia State match will take on the loser of the Idaho/Idaho State match at 1:30 Friday afternoon at Crane Creek. The latter four teams will be competing for places 13-16 in the tournament.

In morning action, the College of Santa Fe edged Wichita State 4-3 prior to its loss to South Alabama and Texas-Arlington downed Portland 4-1.

In the consolation bracket this afternoon, Wichita State beat Gonzaga 5-1 and Portland whitewashed Nevada 6-0. Those two squads will face off Friday morning at 9 at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Results from the matches are below.
