Bronco Netters Advance To Red Lion Final

Boise State cruised into the finals of the Red Lion Spring Tennis Invitational with a 4-1 win over #34 South Alabama. Boise State has now won 13 of its last 14 matches, and will take on Louisiana-Lafayette in the tournament finals Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Appleton Center.

The Boise State tennis team has already improved over last season. In last year's Red Lion Invitational, they were upset in the semi-finals. Not this year. The 23rd-ranked Broncos rolled to a 4-1 win over #34 South Alabama this afternoon to qualify for the tournament finals. Boise State (13-4 on the season) will meet Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the championship match at Appleton Center. Lafayette defeated Ball State 5-2 to earn a spot in the championship opposite the Broncos.

All-Americans Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields wrapped up the doubles point for Coach Greg Patton's team with a hard-fought 8-6 win. Schoeck and Shields have won six straight matches to notch their 16th win of the season against eight defeats. Freshmen Clancy Shields and Steve Robertson remained undefeated with a blowout 8-3 win to go 14-0 this spring. Eric Roberson and Piotr Dilaj completed the sweep for Boise State with an 8-4 win

Luke Shields, 25th in the nation, downed #80 Jack Baker in straight sets, brother Clancy got another win at the third position and Roberson clinched the match with a win at #4 singles.

Ball State takes on South Alabama in the 3rd place match beginning at 9 A.M. tomorrow morning at Appleton. College of Santa Fe faces Central Florida at 9 tomorrow morning at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club with the winner claiming 7th place. In the other 9 A.M. match at the Club, Portland and Idaho State tangle for 11th place. Portland was a 5-1 loser to Wichita State today while the Bengals were being whipped by Georgia State 6-1.

Western Michigan meets Texas-Arlington at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club for 5th place in the tournament. Texas-Arlington put away Santa Fe in surprisingly early fashion 6-1 today while Western Michigan turned back Central Florida 5-2. In the consolation finals for ninth place, it will be Wichita State against Georgia State (also at 1:30) at the Racquet and Swim Club.

Nevada, by virtue of a 5-2 win over Gonzaga this morning, takes on the winner of the Idaho/Lewis-Clark State match for 13th place. That match is scheduled for 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at Crane Creek. The Vandals were rocked by Idaho State 6-1 yesterday. The Zags will play the loser of the battle between the two northern Idaho teams for 15th place in the tournament beginning at 9 A.M. at Crane Creek.

With showers forecast for tomorrow, some matches could be moved indoors to the Boas Tennis Complex.
