Broncos 2nd At WAC Gymnastics Championships

Boise State's quest to add a third WAC trophy this year ended when Sacramento State defeated the Broncos by 15/100th's of a point at the Gymnastics Championships in Logan, Utah. Boise State now must redouble their efforts in an attempt to finally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Boise State has just two weeks and no remaining competition to elevate their performances.

The renewal of the Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship was expected to be close and the six teams didn't disappoint. Sacramento State won the title this afternoon in Logan, Utah finishing .175 ahead of Boise State. Southern Utah was another .175 behind in third, followed by Utah State (.85 off the pace), San Jose State (1.15 points behind the champions) and Cal State-Fullerton (just 1.35 points out of first).

Boise State freshman Shaniece Craft was the lone WAC champion for the Broncos, hitting an excellent 9.875 to win the vault. The Bronco vault team was solid, posting a team score of 49.0. Katie Dinsmore scored a 9.825, while seniors Kea Cuaresma and Kristin Aldrich each hit 9.8's.

Taylor Jacob hit a 9.85 on bars to lead the team and earn All-WAC honors with Cuaresma scoring a 9.775. The Broncos' team score of 48.05 was very disappointing; that event and a duplicate score on floor exercises doomed Boise State's WAC title hopes. Jacob also was named All-WAC on beam.

"Big props to Shaniece for winning vault as a freshman." Boise State coach Sam Sandmire said, "It was not a perfect meet for us but we fought to the very end and it was very close."

The Broncos will find out what their seeding at the NCAA West Region Championships will be this coming week. Boise State was headed for a fourth seed heading into this weekend but will have to wait to see if their performance in Logan knocked them down a notch. The West Region Championship will be held at Stanford April 8. The top two teams and the top two all-around gymnasts from each of the six regional championships move on to the NCAA National Championships.
