Running With The Best

Keron Francis' fourth-place finish in the long jump highlighted action for Boise State athletes yesterday in the Stanford Invitational. The Broncos expect to do much better day as competition concludes in Palo Alto.

Boise State's track team opened competition yesterday at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto with mixed results. Senior sprinter Antoine Echols won his 100-meter dash heat with a time of 10.85 to advance to today's finals to highlight Bronco results. Senior Andre Summers finished third in his heat with a time of 10.93. Keron Francis managed a fourth place in the long jump (23 feet, 6.25 inches) and junior Sterling Small finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (53.06). However, Ty Axtman finished just 13th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:15.75. And, highly-regarded Eleni Kafourou finished 13th in the long jump (18-3.25) and Megan Olivetti was way back at 21st in the 400-meter hurdles (15.85).

Olivetti did finish third in her 100-meter hurdles heat in 15.85 seconds. Former Mountain High School star Mykel Barrie was fourth in another heat while Timberline High School product Rachel Beck was fifth.

The Invitational features some of the top collegiate athletes in the nation each year. No less than 4,000 are entered for this year's competition, requiring event organizers to divide the events into different sections based on seeding. Caldwell's Amber Tavares finished 4th in the "B" section of the hammer with a throw of 162 feet and 15th in the B section of the shot put, with a mark of 40 feet, 8.75 inches.
