Denton Shines In Second Bronco Scrimmage

Brett Denton accounted for 107 yards and a thrilling 60-yard touchdown on a screen play to highlight the second Boise State scrimmage tonight in Bronco Stadium. Jon Barry Van Hoogen led the Bronco defense with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Senior Boise State running back Brett Denton had three catches for 77 yards, including a screen play that he turned into a 60-yard touchdown, to highlight the Broncos' second scrimmage of the spring at Bronco Stadium tonight. Denton also had 30 yards on 10 carries for the Broncos filling in for Ian Johnson, who did not play tonight. Jon Helmandollar capped a 13-play, 60-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge and finished with 39 yards on nine carries.

Boise State's quarterbacks were tied for 3rd in the nation last year for the most interceptions thrown (19) so improving that performance is Job 1 for Head Coach Chris Petersen. Tonight, the four Bronco quarterbacks did well in scrimmage, completing 30 of 49 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Of course, practice is one thing; game situations are another.

Junior Taylor Tharp led the four with a sizzling 199.20 quarterback rating. Tharp rebounded from a shaky first scrimmage to connect on six of eight passes for 79 yards and a 20-yard strike to tight end Ryan Putnam. Senior Jared Zabransky, whose efficiency last year ranked just 49th in the country and who threw 16 of those 19 team interceptions, fared much better in scrimmage than he did in game situations last year. Zabransky completed 8 of 13 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Drisan James for a 12-yard score and then later flipped the screen to Denton who did the rest. Zabransky also picked up 43 yards rushing on five carries.

Sophomore Bush Hamdan, the star of Boise State's first scrimmage two weeks ago, completed 8 of 14 passes for 64 yards, while redshirt freshman Nick Lomax went 8 of 14 for 42 yards with one interception—that Jon Barry Van Hoogen returned 35 yards for a touchdown.

Sophomore Vinny Perretta led eighteen Bronco receivers with four catches for 41 yards, while Denton had 77 yards receiving on three catches. Jerard Rabb, James, Richie Brockel, Jovan Hutchinson, Jeremy Childs, Steven Tracy and Max Davis all caught two passes.
