Kafourou is Bronco Female Athlete of the Year

Freshman phenom Eleni Kafourou has won the vote in BroncoCountry polling for Bronco Female Athlete of the Year. The poll was conducted during the summer and included Boise State student-athletes during the 2005-06 school year.

Eleni Kafourou, a freshman, narrowly beat out Bronco tennis player Hadley MacFarlane in balloting for the top Bronco Female Athlete of the Year. In the summer BroncoCountry poll, Kafourou received support from 44.2% of the respondents to 34.2% for MacFarlane. Others nominated were freshman gymnast Taylor Jacob, basketball state Jessica Thompson and All-WAC volleyball player Cameron Flunder.

Kafourou finished second in the West Region in the triple jump and 18th in the nation at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships. Kafourou was named WAC Freshman of the Year after winning the league title in the triple jump and taking second in the long jump. Eleni broke the 13-year old Boise State record in the long jump by leaping 20 feet, 8.5 inches, topping the Rubye Jones' record by a half-inch.

Kafourou also posted the second-best triple jump in the history of the school, winning the YMCA Invitational in March with a 43-3 mark. Abigail Ferguson holds that record with her 43-5 set in 1997. She won the triple jump at the United Heritage Invitational, the YMCA Invitational and at both the WAC Indoor Championships and the WAC Outdoor Championships. Kafourou also won the long jump at the Athlete's Invitational, The Hampton Inn and Suites Classic, finished second at the Hornet Invitational and finished third at the WAC Indoor Championships.
