The Thrill Of Victory!

On a magical night that had former Bronco great Gerry Washington return to his old stomping grounds for the first time since the tragic incident that left him wheelchair bound in a vegatative state, Boise State reached back into the past and beat Albany on a late 3-pointer that should remind fans of the guts and determined play of the man honored at halftime, and still in our hearts and prayers..

Anthony Thomas drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key with 32 seconds left last night to propel Boise State to a thrilling 83-82 victory over Albany last night in Taco Bell Arena.

The game-winner from Thomas followed a basket and free throw by Albany's Jamar Wilson that had put the visitors ahead with one minute remaining.  Albany (18-9) had a chance to pull out a victory, but Brian Lillis' short jumper in the closing seconds and an offensive rebound attempt were both short as time expired.  Coach Greg Graham's Broncos won their fourth consecutive game and are now 15-10 this season.

Reggie Larry led Boise State with 22 points while Thomas and Eric Lane scored 16 each. Lane now has 995 points for his Bronco career, leaving him five points away from becoming the 18th Bronco to join the 1,000-point club.  Seth Robinson added 11 for the Broncos while Coby Karl led the way in assists with six, giving him 384 in his career—just eight behind superstar Chris Childs.

Karl made just one of six three-point attempts, but it was enough to tie Bronco great Abe Jackson (1998-2002) for the all-time record in three-pointers with 253.  Lane is in third place in that category with 202.  Karl's steal tied him for 11th place with Lane and former Bronco Lance Vaughn.  That trio has 107 steals each, 15 behind Joe Skiffer for 10th in the Bronco record book.

Boise State hit a sizzling 56.9 percent from the field and that was the difference in the game.  Albany's deadly aim from beyond the arc (12-16) kept them in the contest.  Jamar Wilson hit 5 of 6 three-pointers to finish as the Great Dane's top scorer with 22 points.  Forward Brent Wilson added 16 points and seven rebounds while Jason Siggers and Lillis chipped in with12 points each.

Albany came into the ESPN Bracket-Buster game as winners of eight of their last nine.  The Bracket-Buster was created several years ago to aid NCAA Tournament Selection Committee members in comparing conferences around the nation.  The Great Danes are a solid second place in the America East Conference with an 11-3 conference mark.  Vermont leads the conference at 12-1 with a 20-6 season record.  Boise State is in fourth place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-5 WAC record.

Boise State hosts San Jose State Thursday and Nevada Saturday in the final regular season home games for the Broncos.  Bronco fans will want to honor seniors Karl, Lane, Robinson and Kenny Wilson during Senior Night celebrations prior to the Nevada game Saturday night.
