Boise State achieved another first tonight, as the women's basketball team defeated Hawai'i 66-56 tonight to finish the season as WAC Champions and the #1 seed in next week's conference tournament.
The Boise State
women's basketball team did something that was a little tougher than they
thought a few weeks ago. Battling
through a three-game stretch minus their two top scorers and watching a
seemingly commanding two-game conference lead evaporate,
the Lady Broncos rebounded for a 66-56 win tonight in Taco Bell Arena over Hawai'i.
Needing two wins this week to clinch their first conference
title since 1997-98 when the Broncos won the Big West, Coach Gordy Presnell's
team first dispatched Fresno State
Thursday night. Then, on Senior Night
2007, when Boise State
saluted senior leaders Nadia Begay, Michelle Hessing and Jackie Thompson, the
Broncos downed the hottest team in the league, Hawai'i,.
to clinch a tie with Louisiana
Tech for the WAC crown.
Presnell's determined unit grabbed the lead three minutes
into the game and never trailed after that.
Hessing led Boise State
with 13 points and four rebounds, Tasha Harris continued her hot play with 12
points, stalwart Rebecca Kepilino added 11 points and five boards and Thompson
chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds.
which finished with a 12-4 WAC record and
21-8 on the season, will be the #1 seed in next week's conference
tournament. The Broncos will play the
winner of the "play-in game" between San Jose
State and Idaho. By virtue of its regular season crown, Boise
State is also guaranteed at least a
berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, no matter what happens
Congratulations to the WAC
