Lady Broncos Dispatch San Jose State 81-64

The Lady Broncos are rolling again. Minus their top two starters for three games, Boise State is again resembling the team that tore through most of the WAC this season. This afternoon, Coach Gordy Presnell's group ran away from San Jose State 81-64 to earn a rematch with Fresno State Friday at noon.

The Boise State women's basketball team enacted revenge on San Jose State with an 81-64 win this afternoon in Las Cruces, New Mexico to remain perfect in opening games of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Broncos have never lost an opening game in the tournament since joining the WAC in 2001, moving their record to 6-0.  Now, Coach Gordy Presnell's team hopes to carry that magic to their second game in the tournament, in which Boise State is 0-5.

Two weeks ago, the Broncos had gone into San Jose minus their top two scorers and left the court to the taunts of the Spartan players who had stung Boise State 68-60.  This afternoon, those taunts were fresh in the minds of the Bronco players, who broke open a close game with a 22-7 run to begin the second half.  Jenna Galassi led the barrage with a quick three-pointer followed by a pull-up jumper to open the half.  When Jackie Lee hit a layup and another trey and Michelle Hessing canned a jumper, the Broncos' lead was 50-33 and they never looked back.

All-WAC Sophomore Jessica Thompson, one of the two starters missing from the game in San Jose, played by far her best game since returning to the lineup.  Thompson was unstoppable, scoring 18 points while grabbing five rebounds.  Her intelligent play also led to two steals and two assists.  Senior Michelle Hessing, another All-WAC selection, punished the Spartans inside with 16 points, two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.  Hessing is now within four points of the 1,000-point career mark.

As is the trademark with this Boise State team, the victory was a complete team effort.  Rebecca Kepilino contributed 10 points and six rebounds, with Nada Begay adding nine points, Tasha Harris hitting eight points and grabbing seven rebounds and Amanda Stewart a co-leader on the glass with seven caroms of her own.

The Broncos were relentless on the offensive glass, battling for every board and getting two, three and four chances at the basket nearly every time they came down the court.  Coach Presnell's running game was on full display as well, turning a 22-12 turnover advantage into 20 points.

Brittany Powell (21 points and 10 rebounds) and Alisha Hicks (10 points and 15 boards) were both outstanding for the Spartans.  Natalie White added 14 points and Lynette Jacobs hit 11.

With the win, Boise State advances to 22-8 on the year, tying for second for most season victories in the Bronco record book.

The top seed Lady Broncos meet up with Fresno State Friday at noon in the tournament semifinals with another opportunity for revenge.  It was the Bulldogs that started a three-game Boise State skid with a victory two weeks ago in Fresno.  Fresno State pounded Hawai'i into submission 72-47 this afternoon before the buzzer mercifully sounded.
