Boise State Beats Wisconsin & South Alabama

Boise State is in the semifinals of the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic once again. The Broncos edged 16th-ranked South Alabama 4-3 after blanking Wisconsin of the Big Ten Conference 4-0 earlier. Boise State will meeet #14 Alabama in the Semifinals this afternoon with a championship berth on the line.

#27 Boise State has advanced to the semifinals of the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery Alabama.  Coach Greg Patton's Broncos knocked off #16 South Alabama last night 4-3 after downing #39 Wisconsin 4-0 yesterday afternoon.  Boise State takes on #4 Alabama today at 12:30 p.m. for the right to play in the championship.  

 

South Alabama was the third seed in the 16-team tournament; they are the highest rated opponent that Boise State has beaten this season.  The Broncos captured singles victories from #14 Luke Shields, #64 Clancy Shields and Eric Roberson.  Luke improved his season record to 14-3 with a straight sets win over #96 Dias Doskarayev, 7-5, 6-3.  Clancy defeated South Alabama's Jack Baker 6-4, 6-4 to advance his record to 10-3 on the season.  Roberson has now won five matches in a row with his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Craig Dunne.

 

Having split the six singles matches, the teams headed into doubles play.  Clancy and Steve Roberson defeated Doskarayev and R.J. Nagel 8-4.  Blake Boswell and Roberson then rocked Dunne and Baker 8-3 to win the doubles point and the match for Boise State.

 

The Broncos blanked Wisconsin of the Big Ten Conference 4-0 in the Classic's opening match.  Boise State won the doubles point with Luke Shields & Piotr Dilaj and Roberson & Boswell both winning their matches.  Luke defeated Wisconsin's Jeremy Sonkin 6-2-63.  Robertson also won in straight sets 6-2-63, then Boswell clinched the match with a 6-0, 7-6 victory.
